It's actually more accurate to say that if it hadn't been for Detroit there wouldn't be Techno, and if it hadn't been for the U.K. there wouldn't have been a rave scene, as the music didn't gain any real widespread appeal until the Brits got ahold of it.
And really, none of the electronic music we currently listen to would be around if it hadn't been for Disco and the gay club scene of the 70s and early 80s - every DJ, whether House, Techno or otherwise should be thanking guys like David Mancuso, Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles.
Everyone wants to claim something as their own, but it's all really just one long line with no beginning and no end.
