Don't do it.

The HS80's have more than enough bass. You also mix in stereo so why would you need the extra bass channel. Because there is no standard when it comes to sub crossovers you could get a different balance based on what combo you use. There's a ton of reasons why not and without going in to all of them it's just not really needed with the HS80's.

a sub is hard to get to sound right, and the hs80 should have enough bass for your room-size. start with the monitors first and let them play for atleast 100 hours before u decide on a sub. personally u dont need it.

I found it really hard to build on that mix, and that studio was in Vancouver where I only play every three months. I have a little bit of disposable cash right now to put into larger monitors so thought I would do it and get the lower frequency response.

My room is about 10' x 12' with 10' ceilings. I know my ears are not at the point of knowing or hearing the difference of high end monitors, I can just go by what sounds good. That's why I'm looking for some feedback from some experienced guys on here.

I'm now considering the Yamaha HS80's (with or without a sub) and also the Event Precision 8's. I'm going to go listen do them again tomorrow night and hopefully grab a pair. I'm open to any other suggestions as well as to what I should consider. I'm open to spending up to around $2000 for the pair.

Thanks!

10 x 12 x 10 - thats almost square so be prepared to shell out from some bass traps if you want to get the most out of a new set of monitors... adding a sub now would only make things worse

Yeah I saw that, but they were selling for the $40 less than a new pair. I actually just got back from the shop and ended up buying the KRK VXT8's instead. They sounded the best to me, maybe because I was so used to the 6's, but the Yamaha's sounded the worst actually. Didn't like the low end at all.

Noooooooooo! Take those heathen devices back from whence they came. IMO the HS80's are better for monitoring.

In fairness it's all about personal taste but in the extended shootout I did (there's a thread on here) all the KRK's came out bad, and I especially didn't like the little shitty 5" ones. The main thing is that you feel comfortable with them but my advice is to make sure you're 100% happy before the standard returns period expires.

Play your reference tracks on them and keep them perfect just in case you change your mind.

BTW, DJ RANN. I remember a thread you started a while back where you were doing comparisons of monitors. Could you kindly point me in that direction. I believe, the last time I posted that I was planning on getting the HR824 MkII's and you warned me against that saying that if I was hellbent on Mackie, the 624's were a better deal - if that jogs your memory.

And here's the monitor test post I did (it was in the htread we were chatting about the HR828's etc.):

Damn fucking right...

I stood in one of the corners of my bedroom and said, "So that's where the bass went!"

damn it!!!!! lol.......now I'm confused again!!!! lol

I'm going to play around with them a bit and read your write up. Maybe I was drawn to them because they sound so familiar. The HS80's just didn't sound like the low end was clear to ke though? Although I know my ears aren't as skilled at that yet. The Yamaha's are half the price too so it would have been great.

Still deciding I guess.....

Yeah, well my room isn't square actually. The back right corner has the door on a angle and front right corner comes in a couple of feet where the duct work is.

And to complicate things even FURTHER, come Sept there's going to be a crib in here too!!!!
