Hell yeah, coffee and smokes. Good call on the rain. The facility I work at is right by the lake, and it's set in a really nice quiet wooded area with a park and ravine in the back. Always smells so damn good around here, especially when it rains.
IGK, the movie you're thinking of is Nightwatch, with Ewan MacGregor.
edit: when I first started working here, night shifts creeped me the fuck out. There were a lot more demented/confused residents here at the time, and let me tell you: it's not a fucking welcoming sight to go up to the third floor at 3am and turn the corner and see a 90 year old woman wandering the halls in her nightgown, muttering incoherently that she wants to go with "Those people down there", while pointing to the exit door.
The front doors open by themselves all the time, too. But then I finally figured out that it was the steam from the dryer vent tripping the sensor.
The housekeeper who used to work nights spazzed out one night at the beginning of my shift and told me not to go up to the third floor because she had seen a ghost in one of the empty rooms. UGH FUCK.
Doesn't help that so many people have died here. JESUS.
omg that's it!
don't worry jenny we won't let anything happen to you. when you get the prickly sensation don't turn around because you might see a ghost.
walking around big empty building freaks me out. I don't know how you do it.

Well, it's a small building. Only 4 floors, including the lower level which is where the activity room, lounge, dining room, kitchen, etc. are. There are only 49 rooms here.
It's not so bad. This is the 3rd floor, down at the end of the hallways is where I used to always find that lady wandering:
This is the stairwell I usually use...which still creeps me out at night:

i worked a 12 hour night shift for almost 2 years, supervising manufacturing. compared to dayshift, it was so relaxed. i had time to do all of my work, and to talk to my employees. now i don't have time for any of that. but at least i don't sleep away all of my off time anymore.

Yeah, that is the downside. Never feels like you have a day off.

Been working the graveyard shift at various Safeways for 7.5 years. Funnily enough, that ends after this month, as I've had enough of nights. I want, like, a real life again!

I work third shift as a security guard at a vacation resort. Pretty alright I guess since it's more or less the only way I'm going to get my pre-reqs out of the way before applying to vet school. I don't know how I would take these upper level courses with a day job.
Most of my shift is spent walking around for an hour until I tag the next guard out for his patrol. When he's gone, I read a book or something until he gets back. I will be taking two semesters worth of biology starting Monday; I am glad I can finally put that wasted time to good use.
Also, my biggest problem with working nights is figuring out when to eat my meals. The last thing I want to do when I get home is make breakfast/dinner before sleeping.

I consumed an unhealthy amount of Red Bull and Jack in the Box during the couple of three month stretches I'd work graveyards when I was working retail. So gross.
