nevva thought I would be even posting in a thread like this but here we go...I'm not even gonna try to hide it like many do, I am working at Banshee/Bonzai.
Reading all this and so many other pointless threads it just strikes me that like 99% of the peeps here seem to have invented 'Hot Water' when it concerns the music bizz.
Bedroom producers, deejays or whatever u wanna call it are the foundation for the future sound guys, some signings one does on them are good and others..well yeah I agree are not so good looking at the final result. We could do like some of the so called bigger labels and just hi-jack the better names from smaller labels with the neccessary dollars or euros. But we have never, since the start of Bonzai, upheld that policy, theres still names out there that started their legacy with us such as Dj Tiêsto, M.I.K.E (Push), Sharam Jey, Airwave, Marco Bailey, Yves Deruyter...pfff the list goes on and on....and guess what, they all started with us when they were unknown and shy bedroom producers. If I have a look at what's going round at trance market now from so called big names, well it just wants to make me cry. Not saying we are re-inventing the scene here at Bonzai, but at least we try and are looking a bit beyond the tralalala trance sound of today.
Ow yeah and we still put out trance ourselves, bedroom producers, and some of them are fucking awesome when it comes down to trance, uplifting, progressive or whatever niche you wanna classify it in, Asbjörn Hegdahl, Max Angel, Crimson, Blufeld, Sovve, Ville Lope and a few dozen more (sorry guys the list is 2 long 2 complete it, but you all know who you are). ...and some are not so good, misjudged by us, I absolutely agree but it seems many out there are just only looking at those.
I am also the first that is eager to learn about new marketing and promostrategies so hit me in this thread with some great ideas which we don't do ourselves. We have huge online promopool on which all major deejays, radioshows, reviewers, a&r's and god knows what else are subscribed 2. We put out radioshows ourselves, buy advertising, organise small events and gigs, are active on all major communities and so on and so on... Like I said I'm very eager to learn where we are missing out.
Royalty-rates...20% is even a bit low for us today but thinking that with todays situation on the music market gettin a 50/50 split is the standard is just ridiculous. Thinking that with a minor investment on the producers side it justifies gettin a 50/50 split... As a label there's lot's of stuffz to deal with, distribution fees that need to be paid, authorrights that need to be paid, marketing and promotion that needs to be paid, artwork that needs to be payed, a professional upload system to provide the portals that needs to be paid, office rent that needs to be paid, I need to get paid !!! and a huge load of other stuff that needs to be paid easily mounts up to 40-50% of the net-income on sales. So dream on if ur thinking 50/50 is the standard.
And yeah there lot's of 50/50 deals being made out there...but on what do you get that so called equal split (I know). Many have already found out and many more will down the road. Not even thinking
about the number of lads here crying at my doorstep that had a so called equal split and then found out that the label are crooks and not paying or the label has already folded before they even got a first royalty-statement. It could be even worse if you end up with a label that doesn't even understands the defintion or royalties or how to calculate any of them. And then there's also those labels paying more then they should cuz they don't understand fuck all about it either. Frankly I don't know what's worse lol
well I hope i haven't offended anyone, if so it absolutely wasn't the intention. Just one more thing, keep goin all you bedroom producers out there, u have my respect over lots of the wannabee selfdeclared so called high-profile producers out there.
