I make it a habit now to listen to stuff I've never heard if I'm in the car or working out/running just hanging out etc.

And I've been comparing it to my own music with a fine tooth comb. I'm noticing my music tends to be dominated with "soft" sounds. I don't mean soft as in clean or pure like you might associate with sylenth or a nord, I mean just generally lacking strong or dense transients. Transients that really color a track and add depth to it.

I'm trying to be as specific as possible but I mean some of those raw abrasive distorted saws that might bounce with a bass to give it some depth, or some of those crazy sounds with hi resonance/fm and a bit of distortion that v-station dose. Even acids and syncs I really am noticing I don't dedicate a lot of time to these sorts of sounds. So lately I've been going crazy with v-station. I notice this synth is capable of getting some really hi energy edgy type sounds. But I don't feel like I know what I'm doing. I play mainly with the fm knobs, the couple of distortion knobs, and the filter and resonance basically. I sit there pretty much just twiddling and occasionally will come up with something that works but I still feel lost like I have no direction and like I'm wasting too much time doing it.

Its similar with z3ta as in I can do basic sounds, but when it comes to getting transient rich flavors, I always wind up corrupting my original sound and destroying it.

What do you guys do or use for your "edgey" sounds? Or do you resort to mostly using fx in your channels? Because fx can do a lot of interesting things but I feel like I need to learn it more in terms of synthesis. Is there any books on programming tuts just for these types of sounds? When I hear tracks over and over it seems theres just always 2 or 3 really great sounds (rich in transients) that define a track or add the actual depth to it. Sometimes its even just some super crunchy percussion. And it has to be that my synthesis skills are lacking. Except I don't wanna start from step 1 because I know a moderate amount. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

you can get some of the most punchy and snappy sounds out of z3ta, probably my goto synth for stuff like that, what are you doing thats causing it to be destroyed ????

If you want that sound to stand out in the mix you need to prioritize it and fit everything else around it e.g. reduce the transients abit in other sounds, its all about contrast

you could use something like the spl transient designer or compression but be careful using compression as you can actually make it worse

Ok thanks, I think it’s possible that instead of having a real goto synth I usually tend to always be oscillating back and forth out of impatience when I don’t see myself getting the sounds I want from 1 synth.

Nice I just downloaded it. I love the way it really brings the punch out in percussion, wish I knew about this tool before thanks.

Over time I've started to make much more use of distortion and mangler plugs to add that something special, plus transient designers and just the right verb.

Me and my best mate have been examining classics such as Michael Jacksons 'don't stop till you get enough' and it's very noticable that these just aren't any old sounds, but a massive amount of experience and knowhow went into a track like that to make it sound so alive and vital.

Great producers and engineers I think glean thier edge through endless trial and error, just as notable scientists through the ages had a greater propensity to stick at compared to thier peers.

Yeh very true. Sometimes I wonder though if its experience or if they really just had someone above them who knew wtf they were doing and passed the knowledge down to them.
It seems like no matter how much I try to teach myself I can’t make perfect sense of it w/out a person physically standing in front of me answering all my questions.

If you’re too dumb to understand a simple post I’m not sure why an example would make it any easier for you. You’re the only idiot in this thread who found anything I wrote “incomprehensible”. Odd how everyone else knew exactly what I was talking about except you and your cock worshipping buddy g-con.

What. The. Fuck. Reverb is only gonna wash a sound out or mostly likely dull a transient. That’s possibly the worst recommendation I could have got, but still better than what idiot madforbradscock wrote.

For whatever reason that tranceaddict attracts retards on a mass scale I don’t think we’ll ever really know.

Ok cool looks like the last post was a winner.
I destroy my sounds usually be a sequence of over tweaking. I change the sound initially so much that it become too tedious to go back and reverse everything.

I do think however I may go back to z3ta over v-station for those types of sounds. Theres many more presets to analyze in z3ta and it def seems like it has a ton more potential in terms of synthesis. It just when you get to the modulation matrix that results start becoming unpredictable. I mean I know how certain things are gonna sound like pitch lfos or filter lfos, but after you have like 10 different modulations it becomes real hard to understand all the different things that are happening simultaneously to one sound. I think ultimately I need to take time from actual production and focus a lot more on learning synthesis with a competent synth.

I just can't understand why scumbags like M4B need to make it so obvious in every post how bitter and miserable they are.

He could have chose to say "I couldn't understand what exactly you're trying to say can you please submit and example?" and of course I would have submitted one. But he obviously has issues with being polite to people.

Then there are other people who come into threads that are meant to be productive, and act like 5 years saying shit like "moar analog!!". If you're not on this forum to learn, then leave.

If you're on this forum to just dick around people and be an ass, whats the fucking point? I don't think I've even see M4b ATTEMPT to have manners. His daddy must have abused him so badly that its just impossible for him to love any longer.

Its ok M4B, I love you baby. Now give daddy a blowjob you know how he likes it.

Truthfully, I can't make sense of your original post, but maybe get a look at your mix downs. Don't over EQ things too, I was doing this way too much at the start.. don't be afraid to boost on instruments that you want to shine.. For every nancy that tells you this shouldn't be done it can bring a different characteristic to a lead or what not. Check your mixdown first though

Is perfection to much of a interest now?
I mean, in Universal Nation by Push, one of the FX he uses has way to much low end on it.And i can hear it distort in the car as well the last time i heard it in a club.

But fuck, its a fantstic tune and I dont give a shit about it.

any obfuscation of whatever it is you are trying to express could have been solved with an audio example. Instead you get a bunch of wayward posts that don't really say anything. I'm not being a dick, i'm just sick of your little blog like posts that lack meaning. If you want people to help, be precise. Otherwise, you will get what you've gotten so far, a circle jerk of meaningless dribble.

Post an example of what you consider edgy. Then people will know what the hell you are talking about. Edgy can mean anything to anyone. And the gay insults make you look like an idiot. You might want to hold off on those.

What interests or sickens you is not a matter I care about. The post was very vague and I was very much in the right to at least get some clarification. That is all I asked. Perhaps you should moderate all the blatant homophobic bigotry being thrown left right and center instead of sharing your concerns with me. Pretty sure that is against the rules. My tackless retorts however are not.

I'm really not trying to start s**t, here, but I don't think posts attacking M4B for flaunting his musical proficiency are necessarily on point. I can see how he rubs people the wrong way, but DJ Robby Rox is no slouch when it comes to putting up just enough information to sew conflict and he certainly doesn't shy away from engaging in it once it's in progress. I'm not taking you, him or M4B to task but I think a few steps back are warranted before vilifying one person for the antagonism which occurs, here.
