it makes even less sense to recreate the north at some venue in Toronto for a billion dollars. The cost of security etc. would not be substantially larger then what is already being paid out. This does absolutely nothing to increase tourism or anything else for Toronto, Ontario or any other part of Canada.

Correct me if im wrong. The G8 happens in Huntsville, however the G20 happens in Toronto. So regardless the 1 billion ( however high a price this is to pay) was going to be spent to make this happen. Not specfically the media center/ fake lake. The Fake Lake cost 1.8M which yes is still a high cost, but needed to be done in some degree. These are the people that will be reporting about the G20 and our city. It has alot of potential for international exposure.

Having the G20 does give exposure to Toronto...but in no way is it increasing tourism....I highly doubt somebody who is following the G20 Summit is going to turn around and go..."hmmm maybe I will visit Toronto because they had this summit." These people have either already been to toronto or were going to come here at some point anyhow.

The building of a stupid pond did not have to be done...in no way is a stupid pond changing a reporters view of Toronto from a negative to a positive...if anything it will have the opposite affect. I can't imagine a reporter going home and thinking "Man, I would have really loved Toronto it they only had a pond for me to look at."

Simplistic view imo.

I dont think it will effct tourism directly, indirectly through passing comments on the citycan change peoples preception of it. for better or worse. thus one day changing there travel plans. A far cry i know. but still we should try to show our city in the best light possible.

And yes the pond is not needed at all. but a levle of comfort that the city provides will most definetly affect those individuals. We may have gone about it the wrong way, but something of this nature would have to be done regardless.

I remember the G7 in Toronto and it was nothing even close to this kind of security. That was held downtown too mostly in the empty parking lots across from the convention centre and the convention centre itself.
(the parking lots are now all buildings)

It actually did put toronto on the map. It wasnt that long ago when NOBODY knew where toronto was as opposed to almost nobody LOL

Seriously though, 1988 kick started the 90s which IMO were Toronto's rennaisance years. Its been all down hill ever since.
