I disagree. There are plenty opportunities out there for labels. Problem is these things would require them to change their business model, which is way out of the comfort zone of just about any label.
Maybe Lolo could jump in to clear up some things said in this thread? :-) |
Totally agree about opportunities for labels. There are many successful labels operating right now and new ones just starting with promise. As you say its time to change the way they work, conventional ways wont cut it entirely now.
Also yes if lolo or someone could clarify that would be good regarding bonzai.

beatport, audiojelly, iTunes, spotify, youtube, soundcloud, myspace, tunecore, etc etc etc. theres thousands of ways to promote yourself today. and basically if u are a little webdesign-interested u could set up your own website with paypal. then ud get money directly without any middleparts stealing from you. and best of all, u can combine all of these without stepping on anyones toes or break any contracts. fuck labels imo, set up your own for your own music. |
Agreed. Many producers now have used this method to great success. Its there to be used so use it. Riva starr is massive now who use the web to his advantage.
It even explains so in his biog http://www.myspace.com/rivastarr

Talked to Marnik, the owner of Bonzai, so here is some clarity. They are not completely doing away with Trance but they are going to become EXTREMELY selective in what they release. Basically they're going from quantity to quality. Only 3 Bonzai owned labels will remain active with a focus on Progressive Trance....Subtraxx, Camouflage & Nemesis...
Bonzai focus is turning to deep progressive, mini tech, tech house, deep techno and real progressive house.
Hope this helps clear up any questions or speculations.
For more info read the Bonzai Facebook.

I don't think theres a place for BIG labels any more in the scene. There will always be a place for labels whose signings are a stamp of quality rather than way to get on beatport. Labels who actually have a distinctive sound and are selective in their signings.

If it does go belly up - I can release it myself through Bonzai, so just let me know. I'm pretty sure if the release has been submitted via the Bonzai upload tool then you're good to go, but I'll get some clarity for you when the owner returns.
