I'm from da Hammer - it took me a loooong time to finally decide to get out of there. I defended the city daily when my friends and co-workers mocked me for living there.
When I found Facebook and realized that EVERYONE I grew up with is married with multiple kids (I was 27 at the time...) and I realized that my only social life there was with the guys at the gym - I gave in and moved here.
People settle down fast there. People tend to be content with the status quo - the more creative, fun, forward-thinking type of people tend to leave.
I haven't been "home" for two years (other than for Christmas). I see things that I didn't see when I lived there - the depressing downtown (I used to manage Club Monaco and Gap in the Hamilton Eaton Centre - now downtown is a wasteland of bargain stores).
The only nightlife I can think of that I am certain is still around is Hess Village - and I know Hess ain't what it was 10 years ago when I frequented the bars there....
Sorry - go to Burlington - there are tons of nice little places down by the lake. |
Yeah, I'm thinking Burlington myself, too. I've been there many times recently because my company's regional office is located there.
I think the biggest problem with Hamilton is bureaucracy. Thats why only certain things get done, at specific times with connections. If you are a superintendent, and need approval for work on your building, expect long delays, lack of co-operation and help and plenty of waiting - unless you have connections with the council or friends in the public works department who can push the file ahead. I worked co-op with the Public Works department of the City of Hamilton and things I've seen and heard ... the city is stagnating. Its all about seniority, as a result they dont promote the brightest and hardest working people, who then leave for other places ...
And no offense, but Hamiltonians are for a large part - dont care and unaware of things. For example, Hess Village is such an automatic decision for a party place to go to, that many other bars and clubs I knew which were decent go down as a result. So you're right ... it all makes sense. Philthy's McNastys on Upper James was a fun spot to be at, but they couldn't stay in business because of Hess Village (just a random example) ... slowly it declined and closed. I think their Burlington location is still in GOOD business though!
