Sergei Gonchar going to Ottawa is a nice pickup for the Senators.

Let's see where Kovalchuk lands.

sneaky sneaky move to work around the salary cap and make him a trade able asset if it does not work out.

lou lamoriello is a very smart gm. this way kovy gets his big bucks with a very low cap hit even after he retires and they can sign zach parize next year when his contract is up.

expect stuff like this to be banned in the next collective bargaining agreement...but for now, excellent move and use of the loophole.

when they buy kovy out when he retires, only half of his salary will count towards the cap and it will be almost nothing.

so if the bargaining agreement comes into play, what about all the things that will basically contradict it? Will they be forced into renegotiating it to fit into the new rules, or will all the previous ones be allowed to slip?

once a contract is signed it has to be approved by the nhl. They have no choice to approve it, as at the moment it does not break any rules.

everything must be approved by the nhl before it becomes official. For now, the deal looks good. Expect other teams to copy this recipe for franchise players while they still can. This way you can build a winner now and worry later.

Chicago could have learned from this.

yeah. but we'll see how they go. I've not seen a team 'rebuild' that much after a win, though if they see it as a way to sort the cap out. All I know is that so long as Theodore goes back to the chipmunks, we might win something this year

theodore is way too expensive when you have 2 good young prospects.

goalies are not worth much on the open market this year, but prospects are still cheaper.

kovy has never been a winner, but lamoriello has 3 rings to his name and always keeps his team in the hunt.
