Yeah, the lead has to be fucked. Especially after telling us where you got it. I've got a few of these that appear to be fine(look new), but don't work.

most netbooks have either an VGA / HDMI for video out. it all depends on your laptop (i still don't know what model it is) and your TV (also not mentioned) so the best advice I can give you is hope your TV has a VGA in and your laptop a VGA out.

you can't just plug a 3.5 to RCA and hope to get video and audio, lol. your laptop headphone jack or 3.5mm jack DOES NOT output video, just audio, thats why your not getting picture. You use the 3.5 -> RCA for your audio channels COMBINED with your composite or svideo to get picture chief.

Well, that method has worked for me since before the year 2000, when I first hooked up a video camera to my television. It's also worked with every laptop I've had prior to this one. Time to review your technical knowledge, champ.

that's because most of those are A/V ports, not headphone jacks (as it likely is on your netbook). The correct 3.5 connector for it has 3 rings, not 2. The 3rd is for video. Even if it IS an a/v jack on the laptop, using a regular 3.5/stereo adapter won't work because it's not making contact in the correct place. You can't just yell at it and say "I WANT VIDEO THIS TIME" and have it physically rearrange the rings on the connector.

Cheers. That seems to make the most sense. However, imagine the laptop's 3.5mm port is just for audio only.

The rings might be arranged like this:

_|__|_

And an 3.5mm AV cable would have rings like this:

|__|__|

and therefore not match up.

But, as I'm using a simple headphone to R/W RCA jack, the rings on the plug are the same as headphones, so I should at least be getting sound through the TV. I just think the cable is broken. It's happened to me in the past that I've lost one channel due to one of the three R/W/Y wires becoming frazzled.
