I have a method of stopping hiccups. In the past six years I think this method has failed to work about three times. It's a placebo, and I know it's a placebo because I invented it, but because I believe in the placebo effect I still get the placebo effect from it.
It's just a line I say to myself. It was a crappy little joke I started saying when I was about 16, to remove some of the social awkwardness of being unable to talk because you're interrupted by hiccups. "Every time I get hiccups, I get the feeling I'll be one of those people who are hiccupping for twenty years." For some reason, thinking and saying the line usually stopped the hiccups, and as I began to notice this it reached the point where I could just think of it and the hiccups would stop. So for the last six years I've been able to hiccup once and then stop myself.
The one thing it doesn't work on are those incredibly violent hiccups you sometimes get from combining hot with cold in your stomach. I remember I was coming back from a club and I stopped at a McDonalds to buy a drink for the walk home. As soon as I sipped the Coke I'd get a horribly wrenching hiccup. This tends to happen most when I'm drunk.
