I can relate to that feeling Chewy. Personally I hate sounding nostalgic when it comes to DJing and dance music but I'm finding that I have to look back into the past and to the history of dance music just to find inspiration and tunes to come up with a fresh sounding set. It's a well used cliche to take something from the past to create something new for the future, but it rings so true.

But that in itself is a big part of the problem of there being such a flood of garbage being released. There is still great music being made however. Digging is just becoming more of a chore and much less enjoyable than what it used to be.

One thing that is great with the digital age though is that it's easy to rehash different tunes into something unique.

....but it's just as easy to fuck that up too.

One thing I quite like to do that I have not heard anyone doing is mixing psy trance with nu disco.

That shit is sweet.

While the tunes that are played are definitely a huge factor. It seems that nowadays what can separate one from the other is not who has more downloads (because like you said, who can't go to beatport and download whatever they want), but the actual DJing skills. Novel idea, right??

I have to say the ability to mix these days has kind of been thrown out the window. To me it's 90% track selection 10% mixing ability.

As long as they don't trainwreck the track or have a galloping horse going for over half a minute i'm quite content being in a club where the music itself is good.

Now I laugh, people come to me and say "Shit dude listen to this tune!!" and I it's always something from beatport top 10...

damn it's so hard to find unique music, and also it's super difficult to have tunes no one can just have.

I also miss the looking for years for a track and the thrill of finally discovering it.

I get the feeling some think that they are the only ones that know about beatport.

There are still many vinyl only releases. I order from www.ukdancerecords.com and I know I have a lot tracks that others don't have in my city right now simply because everyone else downloades their music now.

Especially when you count all of the tools available for mixing nowadays. Anybody can mix if they are running the right program.

In the end, a moving dancefloor is all that matters though.

i believe the opposite. yes you can mix shit tracks amazingly, but anyone can go from a to b...i only listen to people who like math enough to know that that is all djing is about...

then again i mix better than black guys at a fat white girl conference.

Why is that? That's a real shame I think, and a big reason why I don't go out to clubs or enjoy DJ sets as often as I used to.
A big part of that is where I'm currently living though. Brisbane's pretty lame from what I can tell. Maybe I just haven't met the right people yet, but I miss clubbing in Melbourne a lot.
