Think again, I had mine compromised about 2 months after I got mine. Had to go into TD and get a new one.

They withdrew 400, then tried another 400 and failed, and a flag went up cause I only have a limit of 500, and they tried another 80, and were denied again.

Called when I checked my balance and was out 400, had to go into the bank and get another card, they told me it would take 4-5 business days, it was back in there the next day.

Hence I have changed my Pin and cover up the card wherever I go now.

I'm wondering though if it was actually the chip that was compromised, b/c a lot of places don't have debit machines that use the chip yet, and you still have to swipe like the old ones.

The chip only works if you insert your card but many businesses have not upgraded the machines they use to accommodate the new chipped cards so I have found myself swipping all the time which pretty much makes it worthless.

They should make it mandatory for every business to upgrade these card readers! I wish I knew who did it though...would be nice to lay a beating

CIBC is notorious for this I HATED waiting, I wish they would act quicker - they LOVE to just block your account without telling you if anything suspicious happens...

TD is awesome. I didn't mind waiting at all. They have to cover their ass too. Imagine if someone called and said someone stole their debit card - when really they didn't - and TD reimbursed them for all the "charges" without looking into it first. When TD called me to tell me that they saw suspicious activity, they pretty much said on the spot that I would be reimbursed, but it would take a bit. I was fine with it.

I think that's probably why they gave me a little extra too.

Man, thats terrible. I've heard many stories like these, which discouraged me from ever owning a debit card. And I keep 3 credit cards with low limits each, and keep my bank account divided to prevent anyone scamming too much money out of chequing account (default payment source).

My signature is almost impossible to fake, plus with the new chip technology.

I think this problem also has a burden of protection on the consumer. I sure as hell dont go crazy with credit cards in suspicious places - I use cash for those, and use credit card only for trusted places / businesses.

There are a lot of scammers out there, I frequently delete fake and phishing emails, and other examples of people trying to squeeze money out of people. Train yourself, take precaution, dont be a victim - there a lot of thieving kunts out there. I've been a victim of theft before, once ...

That's the thing - I had a LARGE sum withdrawn out (much larger then any of my usual withdrawals, ever), yet they just blocked my account and if I didn't need cash that day, I wouldn't find out. They never call first, ******s!

I had suspicious activity twice otherwise, changed my debit cards immediately

I've only ever dealt with TD and BMO, so I don't know how CIBC works. TD's suspicious activity department is awesome though. When I've made large purchases in other cities they often call just to confirm it's really me.

TD didn't block my account either when it happened. I could still use it - I just wasn't reimbursed until later. I'm sure if I had to use overdraft too they would have refunded the fees b/c it's not my fault.

Switch to TD! lol

The stupid thing is I once tried to withdrawl money from my TD account but the machine told me to contact my branch. They blocked access to my account because they were suspicious but it was really only me trying to use it. Meanwhile someone uses my account in Barrie while I am in B.C and they dont block it

I think they do random checks on people accounts because in the past 4-5 years I never had an issue.

Were you living in BC? B/c if you were living in Ontario and someone used it in Barrie that would make sense. B/c it would be odd for you to use it in BC.

That's strange though. I've had TD call me a number of times. Sometimes it was just me, and a couple of times it was when my card of VISA was stolen. I've had nothing but great experiences with them.
