i don't know about that. he seems way more down to earth than a lot of 1)well know chefs / personalities in food and 2)food critics.
i'd love to have a beer with him sometime.
i think there's a reason he's good friends with so many well know chefs and has been able to earn their trust.

To be fair, they're all assholes and don't like each other at all. The friendship thing is all a ruse, more out of respect than anything

The best this and the best that, blah blah etc. He seems more concerned with letting us know how knowledgeable he is and how robust a description he can make. Reminds me of those Fodor travel books or ppl who write those reviews on book jackets proclaiming this is the best whatever since slice bread.

Bourdain is the man! Plus he's an ex-recreational crackie, which I can relate to.

I forgot to mention his duplicities. He calls out celebrity chefs while he is one himself. But I guess since his shtick eating exotic foods and acting down to earth he's better than the rest. The reason these celebrity chefs exist is because people like yourself fawn over their fake persona (like bas said). Or maybe you can't get enough of someone who loves hearing themselves talk.

he addresses pretty all of this in Medium Raw. He doesn't necessarily make any of it ok or even explain it perfectly, but he makes note of all of these things.

and w/r/t being an 'ex-recreational crackie' i can't help but remember something he said in the book when talking about changing jobs, moving somewhere new - "it was a transitional period in my life...and by that I mean I was transitioning from heroin to coke"

I'm not an expert on him nor do I hate him. I do get the feeling he is full of himself. Another example is how he gets his digs in on Mc Donald's food. He neglects to mention that a lot of fine cuisine is equally unhealthy as fast food. The two major differences expensive restaurants aren't required and never post their fat/salt/calories of their meals and the majority of the public can't afford to eat it. If they could we'd be bashing them instead. Fast food serves a purpose, and while I avoid it I find it irritating listening to his condescending digs.

kitchen confidential was really great. his newest, medium raw, was actually halfway decent too. after watching so much of his show i have trouble reading his books new - since his writing is pretty much just stream-of-consciousness it's natural that my brain processes as being read in his voice. and that fucks my head up lol

i've met him 2 times. he is the nicest guy ever...but as a foodie i was not impressed with his knowledge as much as i was impressed that he could finish half a bottle of muskie without using his hands.

lolol
how have you met him??? that's pretty cool.
i'm not exactly sure what it means to be a foodie, or who one goes about being considered to be one - but i'd venture to say that i'm a bit of a foodie myself. Past 4 or 5 years I've had a serious itch to try all kinds of new things (used to be a picky eater) and at this point i'll go out of my way to try new things/weird things. Also I love eating out at nice restaurants or w/e - though i've been doing less of that. 2 years ago I was dating this really wealthy girl from texas who didn't mind taking me out to nice restaurants twice a week lol.

foodies are people that travel and enjoy food off of the beaten path.

foodies will not gravitate to 4 star restaurants that serve the same shit as everwhere else when they travel...foodies want to go to the little booth that they heard serves an amazing whatever (aka eat local specialties they don't get at home).

i met bourdain 2 times. Both times he was doing a show on Montreal, and both times i knew what bar to go by, because out of the people that produce his show, 1 of them is a montrealer and happens to work with my gf.
