Whether you go with the FF, Oxford, Sonnox, or any other EQ, just remember that, if you're anything like most producers, you will be using it far more than any other plugin so choose and spend wisely.

Indeed you are right. I'm going to be spending money on various plug-ins & synths so I am making sure I have the best ones suitbale for me and that they will keep me satisfied for some time. I'm thinking of UAD stuff also as I've heard only good things about them.

If you go UAD, I'm your man for questions. Just bought another UAD card. Arrives tomorrow

As for going UAD, there has never been a better time than now to join. They are running a promo right now until September 30th where all new DUO cards get $299 and all new QUAD cards get $599 - This is for both the DUO/QUAD with a $50 voucher as well as the DUO/QUAD with $500 voucher.

With this deal, if you were to buy a Duo Flexi you would get the Duo card and a $500 plug-in coupon reward, plus another $300 in plug in money.

Also, UAD just made their LA2A and LN1176 a part of their "Analog Classics" bundle that comes for free with every new card. These compressors are $149 a piece of you buy them in the stores, so that is another $300 value for what most consider bread and butter, must have plugs.

If you really want to take a stretch, get the LA-610 mkii + Duo deal. You get the LA2A, the preamp, the Duo card, PLUS the $299 voucher still. It is an INSANE deal for its price. The damn hardware units are going for the price they're selling the packages at alone on ebay right now although I'm sure that will change as people are jumping on this.

Also, use jrr shop and look for his 15% discount on UAD products. He has the cheapest UAD products on the net.

Hope this helps. Come to the dark side.

wasn't the LA2A 1176 and the pultec always part of the free bundle. Maybe it changed. I bought them when they first came out in 2000 and sold them before they had become pcie.

haha Dark side. Thanks for all that info mate, I'll research into what you have said and check it all out. I will no doubt have some q's so will post on here.

Unfortunately I doubt I'll be able to get any UAD till end of the year but if the deals are as good as you say once I look into it i'll see how much I can break the bank if needed.

I've seen the older UAD-1 on ebay for around £80. Was thinking of getting one to bridge the gap until I have enough cash for the latest cards. Worth it? Or dont bother?

I saw that on gearslutz earlier today - that's a ridiculous deal!

Indeed it has. I have read those threads also. I take it its worth getting even the UAD-1 then. Wasnt after a debate on UAD as such, just whether I should wait or shell out on the £80?

The reason for that, is that all minimum phase digital EQs sound the same. EQ really doesn't add very much difference to the sound overall, so its kind of a waste of money. Of course, there are some EQs that add distortion and shape the signal even in the off positions a bit, but people who spend heaps of money on different EQs are falling for snake oil IMO.

Yeah +1 to that.

My take on this thread: Don't buy a surgical EQ. The ones that come with your DAW are probably surgical enough. All minimum phase digital EQ sounds the same, so why buy another one unless its got some features yours doesn't? If you must spend your money; buy the fabfilter pro Q. Its probably got more options than any other. Remember that with more options comes more ability to fuck it up though.

The sonalksis EQ is supposed to be a bit coloured, and I quite like it because its flexible (unlike all the analogue emulations) but will also give your productions a certain colour and cohesiveness. Its sort of good to have a uniform sound like that. Of course, you could probably emulate the colour of that EQ by shaping the curves on your DAWs EQ a little, but its a question of what the easiest tool for the job is.

Although I do agree, I often wonder why on earth anyone would need such drastic curves. Except on yo mamma's backside. Sorry. I am on a different med cocktail and that seemed appropriate for some reason.

You mean on the filters right? Those things will destroy your transients dude.

As Richie said, they're pretty extreme...
