Well it's just like the electric guitar pattern in most rock songs.
Many of the rocks songs that I have heard before have that same rhythm guitar pattern , along with the bass line which always uses that semi-crotchet pattern.

But still , not ALL uplifting trance employs that stupid plucked pattern , I don't think I have heard a single Fast Distance track with that pluck pattern , or .. I guess I can only think of Fast Distance tracks.
Some of these tracks actually have a melody , a different lead playing it , and those broken chords are what I call accompaniment , I guess you can call it the left hand part of a piano song.

So whose fault is it that Trance has lost alot of originality and turned into this kind of cheese crater? I'm pointing the finger at..

And well , most of them really sound the same in that video.

But I'm still really luving L'acrobat

That Robert Nickson track is really horrible in my opinion.. I mean come on , the lead sounds like a really cheap trumpet.

He is really the only trance producer I can still stand. He really does try and make every tune sound different but with his original style. I still don't understand how people don't like him here but oh well. The stuff people like here makes me want to vomit so I suppose it is a matter of taste. Great melody in this one. Flawless form and really just a well put together work.

Think of a song like "Happy Birthday to You" - that's a melody. You hum that and most people would recognise it (as long as you can hum in tune).

Hum a chopped up chord progression and most people won't be able to pick the song.

I love melodies, but sometimes an arpeggio pattern works just fine too. You don't have to be able to write a melody to create an effective trance tune.

That about sums up my thoughts.

Sometimes just some chords can be OK, but I feel the track has to excel in other areas ... having great drive, an awesome bassline, etc. Those are things I like, though. Above and Beyond apparently don't care if so many of these tracks sound so damn similar. After hearing the same thing so many times, I tend to skip through my weekly podcast download of Trance Aroudn the World. Sometimes I find a jem, but I'm skipping through at least 75%.

Heeyyyy... one of my tracks is in this vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n0an-7IxSI Lol. Well, at least a remix of one of mine. My original was way more... original. But I still liked that remix a lot. Armin played it. Not that I even voted for Armin in this year's DJ Mag top10.

LMAO. None of these are melodies FFS. This is what people do when they can't think of a tune; play this EXACT riff either an octave or 5th or 7th apart. I find myself doing it. To release a track with this playing the lead 'melody' is embarrassing.

None of these are melodies.

I was thinking the same thing - I started hearing this rhythm in so many rock/metal songs a few years back. I made sure to avoid it when writing riffs for my own band. I may have used it here and there in my trance songs - it is an effective sequence, which is why it's used so often - but I'm always very aware of it when I reach for it.

Sadly, for this digital era of McTrance it really is.

It's not representative of the entire genre. But there's a good percentage which is like this.

I don't think there's a single genre of music out there where you couldn't find large amounts of repetition in sound, tone, songwriting, form, etc. The only reason people focus so much on uplifting trance is because of how easy it is to get an amount of attention a musician doing something other than trance would struggle achieving. Most producers capable of getting a release might know if they plug some overused pattern or sound into their track, nobody would give a shit. Uplifting producers seem to be the most apathetic about what they do compared to other musicians in other genres and it seriously bothers me.

I'm an uplifting trance musician but I'm in the same boat as you guys. I hate this stuff just as much as you guys do. If I go into the promotion forum and see "Uplifting trance" in the title from someone who I'm not familiar with, I go in expecting the worse. It's a genre that's been beaten to the ground with cliched sounds and boring songwriting. I'm probably guilty of it too, but I (hopefully) don't use things as blatantly common as this arpeggio.

The thing that seems to separate me from people willing to just dismiss the entire genre are the legitimately amazing tracks being released underneath the giant pile of shit. If you guys honestly think that you can categorize this video's examples along with the entire genre and say "Yeah this is nothing exciting" then you're either not looking hard enough or letting your own opinions bleed into generalized statements about the genre.

I don't mean to rant but as an uplifter this kind of stuff pisses me off. It's probably the same reaction all of you guys have if you tell someone you like electronic music, and they say "oh like dance music? I don't like that stuff" because they heard Sandstorm play on the radio and didn't like it.

No disagreement from me, my problem is people who actually look down on uplifting trance because of stuff like this.
