It depends, but normally that's the case, yes.

As someone else said, that shoudl depend on the particular style of the headliner. A house opener who tries to force a transition into into something that goes well into the trance headliner where it's obvious they are going out of their element to do so are the worst openers...they are ALWAYS boring.

LA used to be hardcore about having house acts open for trance headliners. It was rare that I really enjoyed opening sets when I used to travel down from SF. It still happens, though. OPener for Ferry at Vanguard last year bored me and the crowd to death considering the music I (and prob the rest of the crowd) was anticipating for the night. I think it's why the crowd was boring that night, too. Boring opener, no motivation in the crowd to dance.

I agree. Its really hard to find trance here in Japan...They simply rarely plays trance or bring trance Djs now. But their excuse here is that Trance invites more drug users over house.

I thought part of the reason why openers tend to be housier is because house music typically has a lower bpm range (120-130) than trance (~130-140). Openers for trance DJs usually want to hand off the decks at the lower end of the bpm range for trance (~130) so the main DJ can build up the energy during the set.

This means that openers are almost forced to play housier music since there are relatively few trance songs they could play in their allowed bpm range.

Also, as other people have said house music often is better at getting people onto the dance floor. Since there usually are few people in the club and dancing when the opening DJ comes on, playing house music makes more sense.

(These bpm numbers are just estimates of course)

Those are pretty accurate numbers, and that formula is typical for most events. Lower bpm leads into the harder, nastier stuff for house DJs. If it's a trance headliner, then the lower bpm leads into higher bpm with epic breaks and lasers.

I open at CIRCUS a lot and it really depends on the crowd and the headliner. When it's a DJ like...say Sean Tyas. well he plays 136+ so there is some play room for songs 130-135. When it's a DJ like Sied van Riel over the weekend then you're kinda forced with the 128-132 stuff.

I do not agree that House music is better than Trance music. It simply has a easier trend to follow because of the simplicity in the music and it all (for the most part) sounds the same. Now I say that because if you really listen to what makes house music stand out (the bassline) it really does sound the same.

I will not defend Trance on that because yes there are similarities in Trance music also. This goes with any other genre of music. Customers have their tastes and would rather see certain DJs than others. Or at least hear different music.

I would prefer Trance over anything because of the following reasons:

I understand the music better
The crowds at House events usually don't know who they are seeing and don't appreciate what is going on.
I get annoyed from House music depending on the song.
