I've always had this fear if I got good enough I would become one of those douches who join a band and play bad covers at hole in the wall bars on the weekends.

I find at the beginner/intermediate stage its not very creative. You are just memorizing songs others have written and performing them like an amateur. That's part of my problem I get frustrated and want be able to have fun and not sound like a hack, even though its just a hobby. I mean whats the point of doing something sub par. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist. I just hate it when my desire exceeds my ability.

Good for you - personally I can only play trumpet for so long before I loose my chops, keys tend to only interest me for a short time during improv and composition, and guitar is even more so.

Why go all into 1 when you can go all into 4?

There is no upper limit. thats it.

10 years ago I was perfectly happy with the music I made... I look back and almost all the music from that period doesn't really do it for me.

I revised one of my tracks today
http://williamashley.info/mp3/talon.mp3

and I'm digging it 'today' ten years from now it may be a different story.

the fact is that music is about the experience - a lot of pros may have good techniques but the music they play is bollocks.

90% of music that was fill and just ok 10 years ago is utter junk today.

Technical errors suck for sure but a good song or bad one isn't based on how complex it is.. some good songs are actually quite simple.

Hopefully you'll learn that. You will never be the best - until you are god themself. That is just the general rule of things.

Put your all into it sure... fact is I find the experience better when I do so when I actually enjoy it because I enjoy it. Hell its not work.

music is expression. you want a photocopy copy it.

Bass and electric guitar. Death metal. Bass is pretty versatile, but in my opinion, electric guitar is mostly good for shred.

But shred is good!

i played piano for a couple years when i was a kid but hated it at the time and stopped, this is like when i was 8

tried bass for a bit in early teens, but only lasted a few months...

Now i do digital stuff, but wish i could play an actual instrument: Still, i just get in session musicians if i want really instruments now

Wanted to get a drum set when I was 12, didn't have room for it. Then I wanted to get an electric guitar when I was 14, my parents told me to get an acoustic guitar, I told them to go fuck themselves. So I pretty much missed out on the whole "rock" scene.

You were born in 1991. Sure, you missed out on the 'rock scene' but it had nothing to do with you not owning an electric guitar or a drum kit

I played the Mandolin for about 10 years and Violin for 3. I know how to play a few (relatively simple) songs on the piano but never had any formal lessons. I've also been meaning to learn how to play guitar, I even bought one but it got stolen.

I haven't played the Mandolin or the Violin in ages, I don't know if I'm still any good. I should get back into it.

That's really cool. I've never met anyone that can play the Mandolin. I don't think I've even seen one played live before. Maybe in a band? I dunno.

Yeah it's not very popular, I don't know anyone who plays Mandolin apart from the kids in my childhood Andalusian band.

Edit: I also play the Arabic drum or 'Derbake', but I think almost every Arab can play that one by default.
