i hate streetcars but buses cause a lot more pollution
in would be for electrical buses or trolleybuses only

and since the city is growing north i would be for subway extending to at least major mackenzie on young from finch station.

the plan is for electric and natural gas buses i believe. But streetcars require massive amounts of electricity which isnt pollution free either. And think about all the exhaust coming from traffic that is stuck behind the streetcar or from those who accelerate quickly to get around them!

Streetcars are definitely inefficient when it comes to traffic. However, they hold a TON of people when compared to a bus, don't they?

Smitherman's brother backs Ford for mayor

If there wasn’t a family feud before, there might be one now.

Arthur Smitherman — the older brother of mayoral candidate, George — is running for a Toronto city council seat and has thrown his support behind his brother’s main rival, Councillor Rob Ford.

“I have no axe to grind here, I just don’t appreciate left-thinking political philosophy,” Smitherman said Tuesday. “No, I don’t (support George), I’m supporting Rob Ford.”

Smitherman, 54, registered to run last week against incumbent Councillor Anthony Perruzza in York West (Ward 8).

The big rig driver said he has had an interest in politics for some time; he had lived in the Jane St.-Finch Ave. area ward for four years but recently moved elsewhere in the city.

“I sense that this is good timing, I think that people are getting very apathetic with the news they are hearing and they are getting sick of it,” he said. “I’m registered (to run), I’m very serious, I have very good demographics in Ward 8 that are suitable for me ... I feel like I’m identifying with the people.”

The elder Smitherman feels he has something to give Toronto.

“I think I have something to bring to the table, I’m sensing there is a lot of other people that are smarter thinkers than the career politicians we’ve been getting,” he said. “I think they are coming out and I’m thinking there is going to be a change of philosophy in politics over the next four to 12 years.”

He earned a dispute resolution certificate from York University in 2006 and hopes to use those skills as a city councillor.

“I plan on being a guy that is right out in the community and helping people with their disputes and their needs and wants and concerns,” he said.

Smitherman met Ford at the Beaches jazz festival a few months ago and they hit it off.

When it comes to politics, Smitherman said he has never seen eye-to-eye with his brother, a former Liberal cabinet minister.

“I’ve never agreed with my brother in terms of political philosophy,” Smitherman said, adding he is neither right-wing or left-wing. “I have to be honest and straightforward with you when I tell you I’ve had very little contact with him since my father passed away in the early ‘90s.

“We’re not in a dispute but neither are we on the same page, it’s that simple, it really is.”

Last month, George Smitherman told the Sun’s Jonathan Jenkins that he wasn’t close to his brother.

And while the former deputy premier earned the nickname “Furious George” from his battles with the opposition at Queen’s Park, Arthur Smitherman said he doesn’t have any monikers.

Smitherman isn’t the only brother of a mayoral candidate running for council in the Oct. 25 election.

Doug Ford, Rob’s older brother, is running for his brother’s council seat and managing his mayoral campaign.

I know...I heard that this morning and thought it was funny as hell. Smitherman is now try to copy most of Ford's agenda but putting his own twist on it.

that's why i said to use trolleybuses, they are as big as streetcars and require less electricity. Also they are cheaper to maintain and less infrastructure has to be created for them (pretty much wiring only). Electrical buses are extremely expensive and if they are able to afford that then i'm all for it.

Streetcars are good for the environment compared to buses, they run on electricity and are easier to maintain. I love my Queen streetcar, and I hope it stays.

What advantages do street cars have over buses?

Buses > street cars
- can change route anytime they want.
- can change lanes.
- does not stop two lanes of traffic when picking up passengers.
- does not require driver to get out to change tracks.
- driver does not have to get out to realign power connector.

I think they are just bigger, not any more space efficient.

lol at the idiots that underestimate him. I love it though. When people underestimate someone, that just makes it easier for them to bypass them and come out on top!

This transportation plan alone is enough for me to support him, let alone his get tough on wasteful spending campaign.

Time to fix the basics before we can even think about the cadillac champagne socialist pipe dreams we have been wasting time and money on for so many years.

trolleybuses are essentially the same as streetcars, since they are limited to the lines they're attached too minus the tracks

I love how people who don't even live downtown or use streetcars whine the most, fuck. Wanna use the bus? Take the lovely route 36 on Jane & Finch Buses are loud, hardly any faster and way more uncomfortable to ride in.

i dont live downtown anymore precisely because of the inefficient transportation. That was one of many things that made me move. I hated it.

i took the streetcar a few times when i lived in parkdale. It took FOREVER. So instead i would just use my car and saved a good 20 mins each way to get to yonge st. (by using roads that dont have streetcars on them)
