Do we have to use the MIDI's provided if we are able to recreate the melody by ear?

Why would that be a requirement?

I'm not touching the MIDIs either.

a Zip uploaded to Zippyshare (lol) would be much better, 5 seconds to upload, 1 second for us to download

you don't have to use the midis. They are just there in case you can't figure out the chords. You can use any element from this material as long as you explain it in your track. For example, A has the repeating 5th interval with the minor 6 added. This would be considered a motive and you can take these fragmented parts are do a variation.

Contest - A by Mad For Brad

Listen to A then variation A

Here is an example. Used the interval motif from A and just changed the chords giving it a new context. As long as it is somehow related. It is fine.

the piano sounds like it would be a cool base for something neat.

the trance A reminds me a lot of gouryella/ferry - ligaya.

except ligaya is a direct rip from Elgar. In fact all his big trance tunes of the 2000 era were pretty much rips of classical tunes done nearly 100 years ago. Except maybe Gouryella. Nothing is popping in my head for that one.

IIRC Ferry didn't even write Ligaya, someone else wrote it and he produced it without Tiesto
