Theres heaps of old labels I don't really know about, because this sort of sound isn't that big in Sydney, its mainly boring generic tech house and the odd bit of "tech" which is really just rebranded electrotech half the time. So I'm still learning!
Will check out those names though, Funky techno is definately my thing.

Yeah, I'm very familiar with Beyer, Liebing, etc. I'm not sure what the difference in genre is between them and the surgeonish stuff I'm looking for is, maybe its a german vs british techno thing. There's definately a big difference in sound though, unless Beyer's stuff that I've heard hasn't really been representative...
Does anyone know what genre I'm talking about with Surgeon, Bas Mooy, Exium, Virgil Enzinger etc is?

Haha, so called funky techno.
I'm completely at a loss as to how they coined that term 'funky techno' as a name for this sub-genre. There's absolutely jack shit funk to it really. I do like some of it though and it's not to say it's all bad music or anything.

Hehe I know it's not exactly obvious but I guess that the bassline in some of the tracks could be called at least to be inspired by funk.
I enjoy the 'genre' just as I do a lot of other techno sub genres (minimal, hard, etc) but it's really all just techno for me

Seriously some of the best music I've heard in an age, and I go out every weekend, often 2-3 times. It was the first music I'd heard in ages that made me think there might be something to this dance music thing still, so I thought I'd post it up here for your enjoyment, so that the gospel of techno can be spread to all and sundry amen.
Does anyone have anthing similar to this thats been released recently? I've been looking for a good Techno podcast for a while in particular. I've come across the CLR one, but its not quite raw enough for me.
check out takaaki itoh. he is like surgeon but better. he is not a surgeon clone either. very good check him out.

Oscar Mulero Is another absolute must. Dark, yet tribally off beaty and often aggressive.
CV is Dead, one of my favourties....
Proper DJ. Acutally uses his equipment.

I could be writing you lists all day, but I have work.
Thanks for the suggestions... If you liked that set then have a listen to the one I put in my first post. Similar but somehow clearer and more aggressive

Thats fuckin epic. I'm really getting into tresor just recently, I don't know why I left it so long when they're such well known label.
Beautiful dark melodic techno
PS
Theres another awesome new track on Tresor by Future Beat alliance -simulation. Not strictly hard techno, but while we're on the topic of Tresor and all.

Between him, Shufflemaster and T-Kitani...loves me some Japanese Techno.
Don't know about podcasts, but there should be sets o'plenty (or at least youtube vids) online by most of these blokes:
Jay Denham
Paul Mac
Killa Productions (Mac and Sims)
Frequency 7 (Sims and Surgeon)
Rob Hood
Paul Birken
Steve Stoll
DJ Bone
Chester Beatty
Dylan Drazen
Claude Young
Ken Ishi
Dave Clarke
Adam Jay
Alan Oldham (DJ T-1000)
I'm a big fan of older (pre-2001 or so) Carola, Beyer, Umek et al, but they've all gone off on the soft tip, producing music for slow people who prefer fist pumping over actual dancing.
I've got a mad set from Marco Corolla from like 2002 thats just ball tearing the whole way. Also has Sven Vath and speedy J, Pascal FEOS and a couple of others.
I don't have a download link but its Cocoon Club Hafentunnel Phase 2 I think. Really worth checking out for awesome old techno.
Sad to see how they've all gotten slower and softer as time's gone on though, especially Beyer who used to be so good. Thats sort of why I started this thread, to check up on who was still banging it out since I couldn't find many of the artists that I knew from old sets still doing this kind of thing
