were you expecting a fully immersive kinect-based mmorpg at launch or what?

it's been out a total of what, a week? given it's a motion camera, it makes sense that it would be focused on motion games. who knows what will come out in the future.

Yea but do they have to copy Nintendo verbatim? They (Sony, M$) both did with their ping-pong, archery, volleyball, etc. No creativity at all.

in the future it will amount to fuck all. it will stay in the realm of shitty-arse games because motion control is unable to replicate the precision, speed and complexity available in other peripherals.

They said this about the Wii. It sold like hotcakes.

I didn't take you as one to make such absurdly uneducated statements.

It's got a tonne of fun, casual games. You have to remember that the majority of people are casual gamers. They aren't like us who crave only the best, even though we all love a casual gaming experience here and there.
From a business perspective, it makes a lot more sense than just putting all their eggs in one basket with blockbuster titles.

This isn't about what you want, it's about what the market wants.

well, let me clarify a few things, i know my comments have been ambiguous.

i think wiis are great. if i had a console, wii would be my first pick. had a bunch of laughs with mates playing silly games. my comment that kinect will amount to fuck all, wasn't referring to popularity, but its impact on the games that you or i obsess over. clearly there is a market for motion control and motion control in certain types of games.

however, there are obvious technical limitations to motion control that prevent it from replacing or improving the types of games you or i might get a woody over. that's all i really meant.

mr carmack says it better than me

I don’t have any great thoughts on input, where the push is now all the motion-sensing things. People always ask us how we’re going to wind up using that, and the truth is that if you’ve got a game that’s finely tuned to one input device it’s not going to come out and be magically be better with a different one.

that's my view. until motion control can do things better than a controller, steering wheel, mouse, keyboard or joystick, it will remain on the periphery (ha!) of gaming.

Well see, you actually made sense there because you posted a proper reply

I agree with you, but we have to push the limits of current tech to progress to the next stage. That's just how technological progress works. Not everything can be a lightbulb moment.

I played Zelda on the Wii. After a few hours, I'm not sure I could go back to a normal gamepad or M&K for that specific type of game. A lot of games can and have been designed around the input.

i would prefer it if designers focused on new and innovative gameplay mechanics than control methods. if someone creates a motion control that makes a mouse or controller obsolete, i'll happily eat my hat and embrace the new tech. but i suspect i'll be playing quake 6 with a mouse in a decade's time.

That's precisely the problem. Of course the old guard is going to be stodgy in the face of new tech, that's what we do! But things such as this Kinect and wii still seem as though we're being subjected to experiments and novelties. The motion control dynamic has obviously been around for quite some time, and I will admit it's definitely getting better, the problem lies in programming and implementation- it seems almost impossible for people to program on it unless they have the precise instruments that the big companies can afford to fuel their gimmicks. Don't get me wrong, video games have always been about novelty, it's just easy to tell that this is a fad that will flare up briefly, and fizzle out just as fast when people realize that practically every motion control scheme is for the same fucking game in slightly different packaging.

Consoles based upon the control is definitely a step in the right direction, so good on wii for putting its balls out there... too bad their games generally fucking suck and Nintendo is dead in the water when Miyamoto kicks it in the next few decades. =/
