I'm pretty surprised at all the hype he's getting here. I definitely feel that RA's review of his latest EP (http://www.residentadvisor.net/foru....aspx?id=124878) is spot on and would have figured there'd be more people here echoing that. *shrug*

RA has a horrible habit of not thinking progressively. As soon as something sounds different from what the genre is used to or pushes boundaries, everyone gets all scared. Like it or not, that's how the scene evolves... His sound is really unique and the best way to classify it would be...uh....electro-dub-grime? I don't know. lol

Abuh? I'm curious... what boundaries do you think he's pushing? What would you consider to be the "normal" electro/dubstep to Skrillex's "different/progressive"? Because he's about as big an example of the devolution of Dubstep as I can think of.

I'm not trying to hate, to each his own. I'm am genuinely curious though as to what you're comparing him to that makes you think his sound is unique or progressive. Because, sure, people are allowed to like the stuff, that's totally subjective; but making the claim that he's pushing boundaries is a little more quantifiable. Frankly I think he's a prime example of everything that's wrong with the average understanding of Dubstep in North America.

I think Skrillex puts a much more upbeat and melodic spin on dubstep, which in my opinion deserves a classification of its own. To compare his work to other dubstep producers like Datsik, Flux Pavilion, etc. is kinda apples vs. oranges. I'm not trying to be on Skrillex's nuts here, but I try to give credit where I feel credit is due, and what he's doing isn't just vanilla dubstep.

If you look at his most recent EP, some of it is classified by Beatport as Electro House, and some of it dub. I don't really agree with either - just because something has a couple saw synths and bumps along at 130bpm doesn't make it electro house, they just have to classify it somehow. I guess it just goes right back to the I-don't-know-how-many threads there's been about why there are so many fucking EDM genres.

I hate bringing up deadmau5 in threads like this, but you can't deny that Joel has a knack for signing some talented people (ie. moguai), and I think he got it right with Skrillex.

tldr; What he does, he does well and in comparison to a lot of other mainstream producers out there I think he's doing something unique.

My issue with that though is that the sound coming out of guys like Datsik, Flux Pavilion, etc. is very much a perversion of Dubstep. It's brostep, most of it is garbage. There's still a very vibrant and evolving branch of Dubstep out there; in fact it's not even a branch, it IS Dubstep. The people who started pioneering the sound are still producing stuff in those circles, and this wave of wobble-heavy filth Dubstep is so far removed that most people who are only familiar with that won't even recognize the original sounds of Dubstep as Dubstep. It irks me to see this "He's the best Dubstep producer ever" reaction from people who are, quite likely, wholly ignorant of where Dubstep came from and what it really is.

While I agree that there's a lot of music out there that is being mistakenly called dubstep (when really most of it is considered grime and some of it is just fucking noise), we can't stay in the past forever. The genre's evolving, just like every other music genre does.

Opinions about what producers are talented/progressive/forward-thinking/whatever are just that - opinions - and vary based on how long the genre has existed for and who's doing what in the scene at that time.

This type of music, while not like "original" dubstep, is a branch, just like tech house is a branch of house. You'll get die-hard souful house lovers that will criticize tech house til the cows come home, but on the other hand you have a vibrant scene with tons of talented producers and a gigantic following. Whether they're douchebags, bros, whatever, is largely irrelevant.

At the end of the day, a genre is nothing more than a label or arbitrary category. If people are being entertained by it and its helping keep some form of electronic music scene alive, I'm all for it. I would argue that electro and house music is at its peak, so props to anyone who can milk any fucking sound out of their synth to get people moving.
