Using ultrabeat is cool, but generally compared to other DAW's I find drums in logic less intuiative, anyone else find that? But I'm aware this takes time to find yoyur feet. I'm working on it to find a way thats good for me.

I like using the arrange window for drums, like in Live or Reason not necessarily the piano roll in logic though.

Hyper editor seems good for this but have yet to get to grips with it.

It depends how you work, I find Ultrabeat great for controlling multiple envelopes curves, velocity, filters resonance. You can always assign different channels strips for the components and group them, so as to process and mix them separately. Resetting parameters, envelopes, etc, is a bit tedious though.

See this is where I have a problem with Logic (my fault though).

I never got in to Ultrabeat and like to arrange audio but if you want to swap out a sample (kick for instance) you're fucked*

So I've been using battery as it's a nice simple sampler but it's buggy as shit.

Guru has just way too much shit going on for a drum sampler (if I needed a sequencer built in I wouldn't be using logic) and all my FX are done via track routing.

Maybe I should just try to embrace Ultrabeat but does anyone have any other bright suggestions....

the * is for a little trick that can work but if you've renamed the sample at any point or done time based editing it will be a mess:


Firstly, make sure logic is closed and that you have a discrete backup of your project.

Now in the working project folder, rename the old sample (lets say kick1.wav) that you want to oldkick.wav (or something), then get your new kick (that you want to use as the replacement for the old one) and name it kick1.wav.

Fire up logic. You may get a ton of error messages, but it should have replaced out the sample for the new one.

As mentioned, if it's a different length sample or the transient is very different, then you've got a lot of editing/nudging ahead but you may be able to nudge or edit all of them at once.

Indeed, for processing and all that its great, like most out there but I wasnt mainly looking at the laying down of the beats rather than processing. UB its great as it has soo many functions to add to this also.

Agreed on all points also mate. Audio is fine but not for everything. Agreed on EXS24 not for drums, I find takes too long to load samples and if you go back to change or add more youve lost your flow. Or am I doing this all wrong? I go via edit>Zone>load multiple samples?

Guru looks great, I'll prob get that down the line, looks complex for simply laying down beats but has great potential for all sorts of things.

I dont really want to rewire from another DAW but might do until I find a good way that works for me in logic. Been reading online and many other folk say that drums doing in logic is lacking for them, thats not to take away that logic as a whole kick ass!

I use ultrabeat. I used to not like it when i first started but i created my own 'drag & drop' setting and now I always use it.

I like to be able to program patterns but be able to make changes if i want. Also it's good for auditioning samples. I constantly change patterns and samples, so that method works best for me, doing it in audio would kill me.

Exs seems good for chopped rex loops.

I always load my samples through the EXS24 sampler, then press cTRl-E and voila, I can arrange the samples via MIDI. Works like a charm for me. Ever since I switched to Logic from Reason, I'm such a happy man Logic's workflow is just so awesome.

I just wish the workflow was supported by some sort of GUI editor so that you weren't stuck with the same colours all the time. Rather annoying actually.
