Why is this? How do people avoid this 36% spike?
The end of the story is that communities need to unite to have local energy solutions such as solar pannel use for neighbourhoods or medium and small size wind generators. There are many other potential energy havesting systems possible. If you don't like to pay for other peoples electricity generate it yourself, there are a lot of options out there for low startup.
It s hearsay until prooven as true. I think that you make yourself vunerable when you trust peoples statements without evidence - you can take it into consideration but you make yourself prey to machivelian tactics to base your opinions on unverifiable statements rather than sound plans of action based on flawless contigency and knowledge of creating a solution.
The local solution isn't a total fix but it can help to reduce rates by energy share.
Electricity except for heat is absolutely not required, for household living, it is a luxury, and luxuries generally come at a cost. The province shouldn't even be anywhere near household energy, regulation - except the fact if they own the business they should regulate it for public interest, and the companies well being for continued public service.
I can't see this hasn't been done - fact is energy consumption is TOO high, if it makes a differnce in your pocket book. I would be paying more for keeping an electric service than using the electricity in my service. I'm not sure about you but I don't need a fridge, I can survive even without an electric stove. Lighting isn't required. People CAN handwash clothing (most nice clothes require handwashing) people can also dry their cloathng by air. Fact is people are just high users of electricity... the BIG users are industries, and the industrial electric system and domestic system should be two totally different things. BUSINESSes DO need electricity though as a standard.
So the people that are effected are businesses and this is probably why Hudak making a case. Maybe not though, who knows.
None the less the real solution here is community organization and shared electricity solutions, buildings using generators etc.. The cost pays for itself - but hold on do people even live in the same placae for 5 years anymore? If the energy costs are "unfair" then it leaves a market for energy startups to fill. Don't rely on the government to save you, it usually works the otherway around.
Realize rates will go up because of increased demand by electric vehciles. They need to build some new nuclear plants, and they are really expensive, if not what is the solution - more debt, or brownouts?
By Ehousing initiative and ecoenergy programs as well as others there were oppourtunties for middle income indivduals to invest in energy solutions.
I still strongly advocate for a social contract basis for enabling neighbourhoods to increase their local grid capacities, on a basis of share of the technology. Example communty members pay a portion the government pays the rest - on the basis that excess energy production goes back into the grid. (this could reduce 'global' energy costs.
