is there really no "prev/next" button on the GUI like in battery? it feels a bit annoying to drag & drop one sample from the browser to the "slot" everytime i want to try another one. i usually try hundreds of bassdrums and percussions until i find the ones which fit perfect in the mix. |
Actually, yes you can do this easily from the hardware (i.e., the main reason to buy a Maschine) and sorta from the software. They both require you to import your samples, though, which is something I highly recommend anyway. Maschine uses a Kore-like import and tagging system that makes using them much more efficient. Once they're imported you can quickly load them into any currently selected pad from the software by just double-clicking on them. It's not an actual "audition" because it loads it into the pad, and there is no next/previous button.
However, the hardware does have next/previous buttons for auditioning on the fly . As long as your samples are imported/tagged, all you need to do is select the pad you want to load samples into (even while it's playing), hit the Browse button to bring up the tag filter criteria on the left screen and the actual imported samples in the right screen on the hardware, and click the next/previous buttons. This allows you to audition them in place and, or replace the existing sample by hitting the Load button on the hardware. It's very easy and intuitive, especially if you have your samples tagged (which isn't hard to do).
The thing with Maschine is that you really need to look at it for its hardware benefits. I love Battery as well and quite frankly, MOTU BPM and FXpansion Geist are probably as good and less expensive than Maschine if you are looking to stay in the software realm and have built-in sequencing. But, if you want to get your hands off the mouse and get busy with a piece of hardware that is dedicated to the software, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
