Redshift and owien mentioned synth1 which is a great free synth, and butler mentioned his own, but there was also another really good synth out there with an even worse GUI then synth1 but it has some of the thickest oscillators I've heard on a softsynth.

I'm not even sure if you could save presets although you could save the settings with your project file. All I know was it was a smaller synth, maybe black/grey was the original GUI, and it had the letter X somewhere in its name.
WHAT THE HELL is the name of that synth? I always wanted to redownload it after my last format but figured I'd ask here, thanks.

Helix or Xhip maybe? Helix used to be free when it was in beta, Xhip is still free I think.
