i agree with you to an extent.

first off, i'm a big carlo lio fan. i love the shit he puts out.

second off, i also like to see a dj work for his mixes, ie. beatmatching and all that, but let's face it, beatmatching isn't going to stick around. it's quite clear that everything is moving to 100% digital, and that's cool with me. as long as it sounds good, i'm down.

what i don't get is mixing 4 decks just for the sake of mixing 4 decks. if you can do something REALLY interesting with 4 decks, loops, effects, etc., then go for it and autosync. but if you're just syncing for the sake of syncing, and just mixing 4 decks just because you can, and not really adding anything to the mix, that's the kind of thing i don't get.

The formula to his tracks are repetitive, but I've yet to discover an artist who makes tech house sound so sexy. 124 BPM, deep thick basslines, looped vocals chopped up, and just massive drops. I'd prefer to see him in an afterhours because I think thats more his style, guess I'll see what kind of set he spins at UN. As far as I'm concerned what you're complaining about that his drum kits are just varients of eachother, well.. thats 'his' sound, isn't that what that is? It's not like Deadmau5 where he's still using the exact same Faxing Berlin kick or anything hahaha..

And to be honest, I'm more a hardware guy myself. I prefer using actual decks and CDs, but when I'm at Stereo or Circus I'm very rarely even looking at the DJ, I like to look at the crowd, look at my friends, my surroundings and soak it all up. As long as the DJ is playing the crowd well and the vibe is great, I could care less what the DJ is doing up there.. only exception is Daome where I'll watch whats going on in the mirror all the time hahaha.. I get what you're saying, but Lio's experimenting just like all the greats. Sasha pioneered laptop DJing on ableton, and now he's back to spinning on CDJs.

His tracks are definitely produced well, i just think too many of them sound the same. Probably cause he's had a lot of requests to do EPs/remixes and i wouldn't blame him for accepting them.

And my problem with full digital setups is just personal, I was just seeing what you guys think of that topic. Personally, i do tend to look at the dj sometimes, to see what they're doing, especially if i paid money to see them and if they're staring at their laptop for the entire set it becomes pretty boring. if you're just using it as a tool to select tracks I can understand that. But you're right that the whole party aspect is not just watching the dj play, definitely not.

Personally I don't get why anyone would want to mix 4 decks worth of anything, but I put that down largely to genre preference. I think this approach doesn't fit for most house but it does for techno. Some people think the more a DJ is doing, the better they must be. I think the better they sound, by whatever means, the better job they're doing.

Bran I have to disagree, and I am not even gonna mention looping... Being able to load tracks and play them instantly is key... Take the djs who play 3-4 decks constantly having 2 tracks going, this is impossible to do as efficiently with decks... You can really create MORE with that laptop and controller...

Lots of djs just don't use the possibilities...

I think the rule of mixing more then 2 decks if you think a sound is extra and just clusters the mix it shouldn't be there....

I'll agree with you that if the DJ is just staring blankly at his laptop for 3 hours it is a bit boring, I like to see the DJ enjoying his music and nodding his head and having a good time while reading the crowd, it does seem that laptop DJs don't have time to do this as they are so focused on the screen. I've even heard that quite a few DJs who don't use laptops don't even like the CDJ-2000s cuz the screen is just too big and distracting, go figure.

Mixtapes, vinyls, CDs, Traktor, Ableton, 2 decks, 4 decks, 8 decks,...

It's all about personality and what you have in your head. Technology can't replace that.

I think my issue is djs not using decks. people like carola or loco dice do stuff you're talking about, like having three channels going constantly, and they use delay pedals and effects over the tracks but they still use turntables and beatmatch. Something about just a laptop and a mixer turns me off, like watching chris liebing videos is the most boring shit I've ever seen. but it's just my opinion, some people love it and thats cool too.

another issue I have is with traktor's sound card: if you're playing mp3's through your laptop then through your soundcard to the mixer, it will not sound as good as playing the same mp3 from a cd or usb connected to a cdj. it just won't. the more connections that are made will reduce sound quality. I talked to Tobi Neumann this summer when I randomly saw him at inbeat and that's what he said too, and he's heard djs play all over the world in some of the best sounding clubs. maybe when they improve the sound quality, ill take some time to try the software or at least have a less negative view of it.
