I think you can look across the entire musical spectrum and see the quality of music has changed and I would suggest most have gotten worse. Hip hop today doesn't compare in quality to the late 80s and early 90s. Today's trance is nothing compared to the late 90s and early 2000s. The music of today's era is very generic and lacks creativity.

And your argument only works if you're an absolute expert on the state of every single genre in the world. Even focusing on your example of Hip Hop. What sample are you using to base your argument? Are you familiar with the far reaches of Experimental and Leftfield Hip Hop, the people who are really pushing the sound and evolving it? I won't challenge your Trance example because I know nothing about it, past or present.

It's been my experience that, in general, those who complain most about the quality of music are those who do the least exploring, and so they're those who are least qualified to comment on it. I personally have never been more excited about music than this past year, and that's because I've been pushing myself to branch out and explore new things. From my vantage point I look across the musical spectrum and see people blending genres, ignoring conventions and pushing their own individual sounds and styles like never before. I've never found music more generally interesting, thought provoking and engaging than I have this year.

Expert? No, but I'm doing the best I can. I love music, not just any one sound. I get a thrill from going out there and trying to learn as much as I can. If you want to sarcastically call me a "musical Lewis and Clarke" for that then more power to you, I don't really care. I'd rather have a stranger on the internet make fun of me for trying to be positive about something than just be one more person complaining about how things change and so they're worse. It's fine to have an opinion on something you've actually been exposed to, but unless he's familiar with all the music of today's era (which, frankly, no one can be) then his opinion is unsupported. It's not about it being right or wrong, he just can't back that up. I'm not saying my opinion is better than his, but his has the potential to change. If I suddenly get exposed to all the music he's heard it won't make me magically forget all the quality music I love that's creative. But his opinion will always be subject to change, all it would take is a bit more exposure to something he's never heard before.

You are right....no one can be an expert in every single genre of music and I wouldn't pretend to be an expert. There will always be artists that evolve music but they are harder to find. More and more artists are now looking for the quick hit and the produce what the masses want....not always what they want.

I tend to agree with you that the people who complain the most are those that are set in their ways. I may not be as up to date with what the kids are listening to now but I still have a wide range of music in my collection of listening....everything from 60s rock to death metal and from Trance to Gabber.

Problem is that most of the music and sound is garbage!!!

I mean, to take crazy electro, simply slow it down to 108 bpm, and give it a new name is one of the stupidest things that I have ever heard of!!

Its this whole renaming of sounds that makes the music so generic sounding....there are just too many sub genres of music. If something is Trance then call it trance.....it doesn't have to be broken down into "x" amount of types of trance. Its the same with rock, metal, hip hop, etc. It wasn't that long ago that you could go out to a "Trance Night" and you would hear so many different sounds to trance. Now if you go to a "Trance Night" there just isn't as many different sounds.

People are definitely stagnating!!!

either they close their minds and don't allow themselves to explore new directions or they get lazy and are happy with the stuff they are used to.
