Oh, and I made basically no music this year, so the influence is negligible, I suppose.

I've made (at least) ten songs (currently working out the bass-line for #11) and one album.

I've probably heard five times as many songs from actively listening in the producer's promotion plus listened to incidental songs posted on YouTubes in the What are You Listening to Right Now thread, in the COR and from various threads in the Music Discussion Forum. Not to mention the songs I've heard in Cakewalk's Song forum. I've also listened to at least five (but probably one or two more) different DJ mixes that have been posted in the DJ promotion's forum including one or two from the OP. If I thought long and hard enough I could probably list about half of the music, by artist and title, that I've heard on the radio.

As for proper artists albums, I have to concede I've heard none.

He explained here:

He wants to call out this forum's producers as a bunch of people who are out of touch because they don't like contemporary music, don't listen to much of it, or both. And possibly also as a bunch of narrow trance heads who have no influences from outside the genre.

To be honest, before SYSTEM-J happened in on the dubstep thread, I was about to start a post asking how many of us listen to what the DJ's are playing in the DJ Promo forum.

I must admit mate that if I'm understanding this post, for someone who spends much of their time on a music forum and who makes music as well, you listen to a surprisingly small amount of music.

No argument there. I have four or five downloads from the DJ promotion forum that are still pending listening; that I earnestly meant to get to weeks if not months ago. And that's probably still only scratching the surface of what's ideal. What's more is that most of those listens - between 90-95% of the sum of material I've heard - are only heard one time.

When I do get around to listening to music, I either have to force myself to do so or it's because I found myself stuck in a rut while producing and listening to music helps jog my perspective enough to come back to it with fresh ears.

Incidentally, that song you made which varies in BPM, made it into the "more than once" category.

I have opinions about this sub-forum formed long before the dubstep discussion, but this is the perfect opportunity to prove me wrong with a very simple list.

I think most of us can take your opinion as it is. There is no need to prove it wrong. It doesn't carry that much weight. At least for me.

This thread is funny. Two points for you, Mr J.

a) Many producers, particularly the amateur ones, don't have a lot of time to listen to music, because, wait for it...they're making it, with every spare second! The amateurs in particular, because they're still learning how to make the sounds they want, and it takes longer. They probably have jobs, too.

b) Is listening to others' music necessary for making your own? All the breakthrough techno artists I've been reading about recently are Omar-S 2.0, guys who never bothered listening to anyone contemporary, and so came up with a completely unique sound.

Other than that, your point is very valid. How does one become unique or sculpt a creative sound without influences and inspiration?

These are the artist albums i have discovered and listened to in 2010 more than once, ive been listening a lot to these.

Hybrid - Disappear Here
Gareth Emery - Northern Lights
Zeromancer - Eurotrash
Zeromancer - Clone Your Lover
Zeromancer - ZZYZX

I think it has become more and more normal to single out tracks from various artists rather than listening to full albums, since you no longer need to buy a whole album to get the tracks you like.
Despite not having listened to more than these 5 albums, i have been listening a lot to various tracks from various artists in many different genres.

I don't know why some of you are trying to make this thread seem worthless. We all like music, we all listen to music, why not talk about some of the new acts we've found this year?

Unless you guys want this to be a stale informational subforum with no interaction between its regulars, that's fine by me too, but make up your damned minds. Half the community complains there's no discussion here while the other half just bitches about all of the threads meant to encourage it.
