Don't think anything is "neccecary" it's more about what you want to achieve, hardware compressors can get results you wil not get with VSTi plugins, if the difference is worth shelling out a few K$ for you will always be a personal matter of budget and taste

I've purchased both a set of Empirical Labs Disressors, an API-2500, a ART Pro VLA-II and a SPL Mastering Tube Vitalizer.

Each has very different character, but all are compressors.
Each does something to the sound one can not achieve with software only. Is that "something" essential to complete a good quality production? certainly not. However, if you want "that" sound in your track you have not other choice.

See it like eating Pizza, you can have your $1,99 pepperoni pizza from the freezer in the supermarket, of have a fresh made one from the best restaurant in town. both will feed you and deliver the calories, the flavour will differ though.....

But since music is hobby for most of us, don't let anybody tell you that you don't "need" a nice high end compressor. That's the same as telling people oyu don't need a motorbike, or a home cinema or a new ski outfit etc. Hobbies cost money.

At the risk of getting buggered by all here. It is my honest opinion that next to no one in the world could identify a ££££ hardware compressor over a free vst.

Seriously compressors are meant to be transparent effects anyway (aside from side chaining, etc)

I'm very envious of course that some of you can even entertain throwing such cash at such (imo) trivial items especially (and I mean no disrespect here at all) when none of us are making a career out of it.

Is it really just gear lust? Cause I'd understand that.

The only thing i can advise is go to a shop, or hire one and listen for yourself. you're clearly not hindered by experience.

If you are referring to me then I'm good thanks.

On my list of things that cost me a few hundred I think a hardware compressor that does questionable amounts of benefit to my tracks is a few spaces below a years supply of toilet paper or setting up my own brand of pasta sauce with Jay "El-Freak" face on it just to take the piss. I feel that would be a more worthy cause for my investment.

Nevertheless I'm not gonna stand in the way of letting someone enjoy music more by buying such devices.

We all do it for love init?

absolutely! there is no money in EDM anyway, so it's about enjoying the ride, not the destination. Very few of us will reach "stardom" or end up filling the holiday season at Ibiza A1 gigs.....

For me, i make the music i like, i have a vision of how i want it to sound and i create budget to get there. It's definately luxury, not a necessity. But there is definately a big difference, denying that is just pain ignorant.

So, again, does one need outboard to create great tracks?!? definately not. Can selected outboard in the right hands lift productions to a objectively judged higher level? definately yes.
Is is a free ticket to succesful productions? definately not!

and then i am not talking about Alesis or Behringer stuff. But more about SSL, API, Manley, Avalon, Empirical Labs etc.

Sometimes it's fine to agree to dissagree

While I agree overall that software is a much better bang for your buck in the several hundred dollar range...

i had the same question a few years ago when i was trying to achieve certain basses and sounds. the answer was that i was lacking skills; sound synthesis creation and mixing wise(still somewhat do ). then again, i've spoken with some high-end industry guys and they recommend that my stuff goes through some of their equipment, maybe just being salesmen, but im sure even more skill can make up for this. a lot people dont realize how much software can be able to achieve even if its just pseudo, if you're skilled enough you can make so much happen, not trying to start a debate here.
