The mid bass right? See this is what gets me because the only way I seem to get a present enough mid bass is with high fm settings or doing a sync styled bass. Other times I close the LP filter rather low, (over a typical saw bass) then up the resonance and notice sometimes I get an entire new more present sounding bass. But then I usually gotta keep the filters closed otherwise once it opens it sounds horrific. Distortion helps too but it tends to always dull it out killing the groove. You can only use a little it seems and its not enough most of the time.

It seems like its really hard to get that loud mid bass region unless I resort to a sync or fm sound. Maybe I'll just have to learn how to make different types of syncs/fm basses but most of the time they always seem to sound similar. And when I say fm bass I mean that sharp metallic effect you sometimes get in v-station or subtractor. Tyas used it to layer his bass in his FM interview. Just seems impossible to manipulate a normal saw bass so its got similar presence.

But I do usually like to come in with a more neutral or happy sounding melody, and once they break drops I like it to change into something a lot more serious or sad sounding. It just like that type of contrast for the break. The melody in this one is extremely generic like you said and theres so much more I can do in terms of that so I will.
I think I'm getting too much sub from sub bass intefering with the kick, so I'm going to cut out a bit more lows and see if it punches better. If not I'm just replacing the kick entirely.

So I have 5 new goals then:
1. Get the kick breaking through by opening up room in the sub or replace it all together.
2. Work out a legitimate melody progression.
3. Work on getting more definition/mid/hi frequencies from the mid bass. I'll likely layer a more resonant oscillator all together over it possibly a sync for some presence.
4. A lot of sounds are mono'd that should be seperated, and once those sounds are widened a bit that will also help the mid bass.
5. Last is atmosphere/pads. I already have a tense sound that I can keep real low and wide and its really going to add another dimension in terms of the emotional content. But I was playing with it before and it breaks through beautifull I just had a feeling I'd be redoing the melody so I'll do that first.

I think thats a good starting point though and if my expectations are reasonable maybe by next week I can compete with Mr Blueman. I figured today might be rushing it lol.

After this you will have something really really good!

The WIP Is not to shabby.
The bass should be better and harder.
May be all you need is better Reference Monitors along with your echo for your mix to bring that bass out.
Get the Yamaha HS-80!
what Reference Monitors are you using now?

Thank TL & ATX.

I have actually developed a consistent system now that I like. And the system is basically how I route and bus all my sounds. I just feel like I can put a mix together now w/out so many fundamental problems I was running into before.
I think really I just understand much better what a lot of the knobs do. Before I had an idea, but now I can actually predict how a sound will be altered before I even route it. For some reason theres just a much higher level of familiarity that I never had before. Even the midbass in this mix I listened to it solo'd, and realized the problem was not sound quality or presence. Its more than loud/groovy enough w/out being changed. So now instead of endlessly changing sounds, I'm really working more strategically in the mixer.

And I've already made some excellent progress with this track. Maybe I'll resubmit tommorow. ATX I'm using the same monitors tyas uses, although I guarantee that was no intented by any means. They were affordable (truths) so I got them a couple years back. I'm excited because theres so much room for improvement in my monitors, although I kinda feel like I know them now too.
I had actually realized before I submitted it that the midbass was lacking, its really a revision I've been working on for hours now. But I know what my main issue is, its really the levels and settings I'm using. Theres on problem sound specifically that I'm just gonna wind up replacing. I tried eqing it but its still stifling the mid bass. If I can't work out better settings, then I'm just gonna remove it completely. Its too similar to the actual mid bass, and the only way it seems to fit is by panning, which I won't do, so its likely getting scrapd.
