Huh, that's cheap. I'm not actually in the market for one (I have a PS3) but I did my grocery shopping yesterday and Woolworths had a Toshiba Bluray player going for AU$170.00 (which struck me as very very cheap, compared to what they were going for a year ago). But I wasn't sure.

Secondly, you don't need a HDMI cable to watch Bluray, you also have DVI cables but thats besides the point really.
VGA cables can run more than 2048x1536.

You can get blu ray drives from msy technology for 50 bucks, or burners for 100 bucks. You can also get blu ray players (for connecting to the tv kind) for 100.
Also, I can see the difference between blu ray and dvd on my crappy 1280x1024 crt moniter (although I do use my comp on a 1080p tv).
