Totally feel bad for the officer, and his family, RIP.

But, I gotta say it's pretty intense to shut down the whole core of Toronto for this. Imagine if this money was used towards cancer research or healthcare in general, education, disabilities studies etc. I'm all for honouring the fallen but it just doesn't seem like the most productive way to do it.

This reminds me of the time I was trying to get home from the Guv on a Sunday morning with Smunky. And we waited on Yonge for 1.5 hours for a bus. The police had shut down Yonge after a parade, and didn't tell the TTC they were diverting all traffic. The TTC supervisor showed up and was asking around, and had no idea where the buses were going or why they were not on Yonge.

how long was the street closed to the TTC streetcar?

I feel really bad for the family and the officer himself(RIP)

but what a crock. over hyped media bs as usual. Shutting down the city for this. He is no more important than you or I. We dont live in Afghanistan or Liberia. The job is all about revenue collection, not keeping the city safe( oh i went there)
they hype up this job like "you never know if they will come home that day". gimme a break.

RIP to him, terrible...but come on(to the rest of it)

I didn't stick around as I had to get to work. It was open 2 hours later when I went back out, but I have no idea how long the barriers were up for.

Guys, it's a street car, it cannot just turn where ever you tell it to. How can a force which is charged with keeping the streets safe and orderly, not inform the transit commission that it is shutting down one of the busiest routes in the city?

RIP.

But fuck, guys get your act together.

Not true. TTC has been blasting out emails since yesterday on the route disruptions. You can sign up on the TTC website.

maybe its a problem with the TTC higher ups letting their staff know what's going on....wouldn't be the first time there was miscommunication within the TTC.

Its fine to close a street for the procession. I draw the line at closing down the gardiner and DVP at the height of rush hour though. Thats just dumb.

I feel for his family but pissing thousands of people off is not the way id want to go out (unless they were all socialist liberals LOL!!!)

Got this in my email:
quote:
Expect delays to the 5 Avenue Rd, 501 Queen, 504 King & 505 Dundas routes; 11am-1pm, for a police funeral. Last updated Jan 18, 2011 7:48 AM

The 504 King streetcar is turning back at Spadina Ave. and at York St. due to the ongoing funeral for Sgt. Ryan Russell. Last updated Jan 18, 2011 12:30 PM

I was coming in at 10:30, and that is when they closed the street. So they only informed users through the email alert, 2 hours after they started blocking off that section? Strange.

I didn't receive a single email from the TTC yesterday informing me about the service disruption.
