Here's my take on the genres. I'm slightly obsessive about categorizing my music, so this is how I divide it up:

Melodic implies melody, meaning any trance track that has a pleasantly musical sound at its core. Progressive, for example, centers more on beat and repetition than melody. Melodic is a very broad label that can decribe most softer or emotional trance tracks. Examples could include PvD - For An Angel or Oakie - Southern Sun (Tiësto Mix) as well as many others.

Epic means something a bit more specific to me. If a track is "sweeping" or "soaring" with many harmonious chords and dreamy synths I usually describe it as epic. Examples include Solar Stone - Seven Cities (Armin van Buuren Mix) or Plastic Boy - Silverbath.
