I am a die hard Skinny Puppy fan before anything else. I'm truly not sure how it got started on here that I am all gung-ho for NIN - I understand I've said my part of how I feel about his work, but if you think I was listening to NIN back in high school and wearing black all of the time, you're sadly mistaken as I never even liked NIN until I was probably 20. After I liked trance music. Figure that out.

I really do not see at all what's not to take well. The misconception is that Trent is all fake angst and merely playing with the emotions of his fans like commercial "emo" groups did back when emo still existed. I like NIN quite a bit because it's not this at all, and indeed Trent has mentioned several times that the person on stage is telling a story with extremely mutable lyrics - it's a performance foremost, so assuming every song of his is directly about one thing or the other - most of which do involve very dark imagery - is far more a reflection of the audience than what he wrote the song about. Yes, many of his songs deal directly with depression and anger, but the art he makes is essentially synthesizer-based composition with pop hooks and vaguely experimental elements wrapped up in a few words that can take on a variety of interpretations. I hope it doesn't sound like I am candy-coating things in some sort of defense, it's just that the man on stage bellowing "God is dead" is in fact memorializing a time when he felt abandoned, and just because people can identify with this doesn't mean he is pulling their strings to herd them into buying merchandise.

I haven't even heard the Social Network soundtrack yet. I don't actually jerk off to every thing he has ever touched. It's just that I think he was the last person to truly take the reigns from previous innovators and transform it into a deeply personal work that is equally about the composer and the listener. It's the same thing people probably like the most about all electronic-based music.

//Also, he is expecting a baby any time now, and is married. He can't get away with singing Ringfinger anymore.

I think kev was just making a light hearted jab. No need for an essay detailing your inner most feelings and personal history.

igk, this is what's called a conversation. If you knew how to conduct one, maybe you wouldn't have to hide in the middle of the circular coat racks at Babies R' Us anymore.

He's a sellout, that's what he is. A sellout of the worst kind. I hope he takes that Oscar and shoves it up his asshole, while he talks about how much heroin he did in "the good ol' days."

Fuck. Someone had to say it.

Who are we talking about again?

I think Hal is in denial about how much he loves Trent. He is clearly heartbroken. ((HUGG))
