That's also how I read it - the "raw sound" common in older trance isn't the "raw/dry/in your face sound" heard today.

Your best bet to get those sounds would be to grab some of the hardware synths used on those tracks.

For the overall sound - in general I'd say do less EQ cutting so the instruments aren't as separated from each other. In general, use more reverb. Find drum samples which sound more like those used at that time. Every sound affects every other sound, so having modern sounding drums will mean the "raw sound" won't sound right in context.

As other people have said, tape saturation could work well. I don't know if distortion/overdrive will help (of course, it totally depends on what type of distortion/overdrive). In general though, distorting things isn't the way to get old style "raw but still quite clean" sounds.

Surely it's all about the samples you use more than anything?

Get some old school kicks, hats, etc.

Why do people start threads like these, then just disappear.

Doubtful. If he was that busy, he wouldn't have posted such a basic/ambiguous question in the first place.

That gives "raw" and "in your face" a whole different meaning.

very little distortion. but i would couple it with a tiny bit of flanger (maybe 5% mix with 15% feedback)

also if I'm interpreting your question right, a square wave should do the trick. i disagree with the statement about using less hi-hats. just don't make them as pronounced and keep your open hats simple and your snare/clap relatively thin. perhaps try to compress fewer things. definitely don't compress (or compress sparingly) your lead synth - that's a very recent thing, probably a result of every producer under the sun going to benno for engineering help.
