These are the top 2 AntiVirus programs and have been for years:

BitDefender

Kaspersky

I have been using BitDefender for 3+ years and it has been the most thorough AV program I have ever used without slowing down your computer to a snail's pace. Kaspersky is just as good, if not better for being thorough but it uses more resources and is much more expensive.

at least you know if Microsoft is behind it, somebody is updating the virus definitions... can't say the same about some of the other compeditors

I must have been the first to document a recent 'ransom ware' infection in their database or something.

If you are fed up with windows virus you can install linux ubuntu and add software like office 2007, nero, ares, adobe reader, fireworks and so on. Even you can install a Windows 7 theme.

So I tried Avast and it isn't that I don't like it, but it isn't good enough for me to connect to work from home. It keeps saying that I don't have a good enough AVP.

I think I am gonna give Windows Security Essentials a shot now.
