Its one of the few shooters in existence where ballistics are affected by gravity, so you need to take that into consideration when shooting. The further away the bad guys are, the more you have to compensate for bullet drop. The game (at least dragon rising) is also set in huge open environments, as opposed to the corridor-like nature of the CoDs & battlefields. Shooting engagements tend to happen over much greater distances too, where you can barely see the enemy.
Dragon rising had its share of issues (MP lag problems, control of vehicles on PC, poorly designed missions) but still a breath of fresh air in the military-themed shooter genre. Obviously its nowhere near as hardcore and sim-like as Arma, but I find those games rather clunky as eastern European games tend to be.
Overall I found the shooting mechanics and huge environments were what hooked me, felt very satisfying to pull off 400m shots with the assault rifle, rather than the 5m-10m ranges you get in CoD. |
I must confess that I actually love COD4 (the rest of the series can go to hell)... And I absolutely hate wide-open maps for the exact reason that any scrub with a good view-point can get kills. I'm a big fan of urban warfare games.
The bullet-drop mechanic is cool though, it reminds me of my bench-mark for FPS quality that included bullet-drop, limping from leg damage, and bleeding when shot (with bandaging to repair).
Also, I miss doors in FPS games

Bullshit.
Those forces combine to create a soaking, boiling mudstorm on Valentine's Day.

Haha, no shame in that! CoD1 is one of my top shooters of all time (also like 4, but 1 was the first so had the biggest impact for me).

Well, the MP in dragon rising was so abysmal I doubt you’d even get that far! We played it for maybe 20 mins at a LAN party before we called it a day. Coop was fantastic though (asides from mission design).

Yeah, lots of doors in the old rainbow 6 games, not so much anymore. Funny, I hadn’t even noticed that but now you mention it is pretty obvious.

Oh, and doors like in Halo that automatically open don't count either.
I miss the strategy involved simply in having doors to open and close.
In Action Quake and Goldeneye, you could close the doors while you ran through them to escape people chasing behind. When you were familiar with a map you could leave a specific path of doorways OPEN so that you could easily run away, closing each one behind you along the way. Hell, even the direction the door swung could be used as an advantage when deciding where to position yourself in a room/building.
And I think it all goes to your point about dumbing down games so that they can work for consoles... what the hell button (besides a universal action button) could they assign something as easy as "open door"?
