interesting thread..
this is something I havn't really paid that much attention to, but have noticed once in a while when good DJ's mix...
one time I could've sworn (well i was a bit drunk too) that a famous dj I was watching.. don't even remember who it was.. didn't have a break until maybe 30 minutes after his set started..but during those 30 mins the crowd was moving, not going crazy, but moving..
I guess when you're controlling them by moving, when you whip out that break that's when they'll go crazy..

but yeah, i'm also curious to know a few techniques as to keep the beat going. Because like thoughtcrime mentioned, most songs do have breaks- well at-least the type of stuff I like to play (pleasurekraftish/format: b type stuff) ..
if people are saying that a break every 3-4 songs is good, that'd be kinda hard because i'd say a good 90% of my songs have a decent sized build up in them.. of course, some shorter than others - but not many are 'very' short or buildup-less.
do you just mix in another song before the build-up comes in? or look through your songs and see which ones don't have a buildup? both? cause I think it'd be pretty hard for me to find songs in the genre I like that don't have some sort of buildup..
