Compulsive liars do it to compensate. Theory is that it's a coping mechanism for people who experienced trauma as a child. They generally can't help it (hence it being a compulsion), and probably don't even know they're doing it or that it isn't normal behaviour. Pathological liars do it for personal gain or with malicious intent. They generally have a rhyme and reason for doing it, and their lies end up affecting others; whereas, compulsive liars' lies are harmless.
