I usually just use my same kick sample, just shortened a bit, and do this same thing ^
You'll notice if you want your sidechain to affect right when the beat hits (ie. the shortest attack possible) you'll get the intense clicking sound from the tiniest bit of sound hitting before it dips down - so usually I'll put the trigger a little bit off-beat before the beat, and give myself a good attack (like 2-3 ms or so) so it smooths it out and is equally low on volume when the beat hits. I feel doing it this particular way gives you the most control over sidechaining
