I enjoyed this a lot more than I imagined. In the past I passed off Suomisaundi as crap, but it's got more merit than I thought. It's funny, ignorant people say that dance music is for taking drugs, but this stuff is really druggy. Like Shongle or Younger Brother, it's got that short attention span, zany/wacky/goofy aspect to it which makes so much more sense when you're on acid or shrooms.
I think this is your best mix yet, mate. Interesting tunes, mostly natural mixing, and a pretty solid flow. However, the reason I say that is because there were tracks in here which I couldn't listen to by themselves, but you gave them enough context that they made sense and were more enjoyable. I think this is probably the highest compliment you can get as a DJ, too: making bad music sound good. There were things I outright liked though. There were some great drum 'n' bass-type tracks and the 'hippie with one drum' sample was hilarious. I wouldn't really listen to most of this stuff at home, but at a big outdoor party, it'd be heaps of fun. Great work. |
Thank you so much, that really means a lot. The first suomi set I heard was from Magadansky (mix #4) and it was just like you described. Druggy beyond imagination, fun, interesting, and exciting. The hippie with one drum sample was from the Siaqua track, and I found that to be totally random but hilarious. I feel like that track has the essence of Suomisaundi, where there is just enough coherence to form a full track, but so much ADD going on to where the music is changing constantly. That's what I tried to do with the rest of the mix, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm not sure that, as much as I enjoyed this, I will be spending much time tracking down much more but if I see any on a festival line-up I will be sure to make an effort to go see. |
Agreed. I heard a bunch of suomi before I compiled this list, and a lot of it just sounded like regular psytrance. This kind of music is best left to DJ's who can make a whole set out of it like Mag and myself

Yeah, Tipper is pretty cool. Check out this album, super neat.
