Until they make a flawless, unbreakable, non crashing, beer and raver proof laptop, there will always be a need for CDJ's and CD's. I don't know a single laptop DJ worth their salt that does not bring a full CD wallet to a club just in case.

If anything, the rate of laptop malfunction has been steadily increasing year upon year. The current rate is 1/3 of all laptops will fail to point of repair or unit death within it's first three years. Good luck just taking you gigging laptop to a club regularly.

Secondly, if you're going to learn on vinyl, then don't buy vestax decks. Buy technics, and some cheap vinyl.

I can count on one hand the number of clubs I've seen in 10 years that use vestax decks.

2 x pioneer CDJ800mk2 and a mixer, cost the same as 2 techs and a mixer, and a fair bit less than a good laptop and serato/trackor and a mixer.

CDJ 800mk2 x2 = $2000 + Pioneer's shittiest mixer is almost $3,000 o_o

A 13" Macbook Pro is like $1000 + a Pioneer DDJ T1 or a Traktor Kontrol S4 is closer to $2500 after tax, and most people on this site probably already have a decent laptop

I'm looking to start DJing as well, but I think I'm going to have to learn on someone else's CDJs haha, because the Pioneer DDJ T1 is already a lot of money for me.

EDIT: And wouldn't it be smarter to continue being a laptop DJ but just know how to use CDJs in case? In this day and age I don't think there's much of a stigma attached to being a laptop DJ.

Fucking Lol, I'd love to be the salesman at Guitar center when you walk in, if you think those prices are what you should pay for CDJ's and a mixer!

CDJ800 mk2's LIST price is $650 each, and that's before any haggling or the fact you're buying two and a mixer.

2 x CDJ800mk2 at LIST would set you back $1300 and a basic two or three channel mixer at most $250, therefore $1550 at list price, or probably closer to $1450 street price for the whole lot.

Macbook Pros start at $1199 for the most basic one (before any ram or drive upgrades) and there's not haggling to be had on mac, so that's what you're going to pay.

Traktor S4 list is $899, and the street price is never going to be lower than $800. The DDJ T1 is $1100 and I've not seen them go for less that a smudge under $1000.

So again, that means, the laptop setup you descirbe is going to be at least $1199+800 = $2000, as opposed to $1450 for CDJs and a decent little mixer.

Oh, and that doesn't take in to account that with a laptop setup you'll probably need more ram and bigger, if not second external drive(s) which adds another $150 minumum.

...and a bunch of CD's just in case
