Agree, or at least a shit promoter or sound tech.

When I do events, I make it a point to figure out what exactly my DJs will be playing on and bringing (and how many channels they need into my mixer) BEFORE the event even happens. A lot of times you can work out a lot of these details ahead of time.

As a DJ, I just do my best to wait until it looks like the outgoing DJ has a moment, and politely ask them the best way for me to set up without getting in their way. (And beware, beware, beware of turntables when you're plugging shit in, for the love of christ.)

This place was probably a bit of a special case in some respects: it's basically a small bar, so the booth's just tucked away in the corner and there's no stage etc to speak of. No house engineer either.

The promoters don't have any interest in the technical side, they just let the DJs work it out for themselves. And their quality control on the bookings front sometimes has a lot to be desired, but they're mates who I've been working with for years.


But this slightly odd case aside (actually it's pretty common in London, but still)...

The same still applies to some proper clubs I've played at: small booth = kit problems. At least they usually have a sound engineer, but in my experience they're rarely in sight!

I actually know very few clubs who would do anything but laugh at a DJ providing a tech rider, unless they're a big enough headliner. There are too many jumped-up DJs as it is without encouraging them to start demanding things. Or did you mean it in the sense of simply a list of the kit you're planning to bring? That'd be a good way for a club to keep control actually - "If you don't tell us in advance, it's not allowed in the booth!"

Otherwise I'd whole-heartedly agree, and you're right I probably should have just staked my claim, but I like to try to be the nice guy


Some good ideas above about the right way to turn up with your own kit though, so thanks everyone.

sorry to clutter this thread up with a noob question, but i couldn't find anything in the sticky (maybe i didn't look hard enough) about it ...

but how does the transition between a cdj and laptop dj (or two laptop dj's using different laptops, etc.) work? does one just limit himself to one/two channels of the mixer for the last song of the set, and the next dj uses another channel to mix in?

Normally something like that, yeah.

Even if the previous DJ is using all 4 channels, the laptop DJ can usually find a spare input to feed into then kindly ask the DJ before to finish on a different channel so the shared channel can be switched for their first track.

It gets a bit more complicated if the laptop DJ likes to use the main mixer to mix, so needs 2, 3 or even 4 inputs to the mixer. Then it gets even more complicated if one laptop DJ using 4 inputs is followed by another laptop DJ using 4 inputs!

Communication is the key... or, as we mentioned earlier, any laptop DJ could just start their set with a CD then plug their laptop channels into the mixer while that's playing.
