Also, as Kit pointed out, automation tracks could be counted too. It's not exactly clear from the original post whether it's just audio tracks (though I took it that way). I guess all the MIDI tracks could be counted as well.

bout 25 tracks max (including busses) + about 4 to 6 return tracks

Thing is I will take 3 tracks of synth lead, with 5 fx sends and convert it to a 1 track audio 'lead' file, so 8 becomes 1.

I can tell you it now takes me about 2 or 3 months working every night and more at weekends to make 1 track. Anything I make quickly for me just doesn't stand out so I can't get excitiied by it especially given the fact thousands of tracks are released each week, so I guess in my own case it's not number of lanes, but number of hours.

yeah, but on a serious note, this will (I think) free up some CPU, instead of having the same filter+compressor+eq treatment on every track you can send those track to one send channel and save some processing power

My last project had a single MIDI note per track and I chopped the vocals up into about 378 pieces, each on their own track. I ended up with 16,743 tracks. Oh, and 12 busses. I'm awesome and I win.

Can we delete this newb thread now?

Sends don't really help with filtering and compression or EQ. They really only work for delay and reverb and things like that, where you want a 100% wet signal mixed with the dry one.

Also, compression, EQ, filtering don't use that much CPU power.

How is this a newb thread? Im just curious,if you don't have anything nice to say then don't post.

Interesting to see that some only use 14,I would love to try and get up to 100 channel strips,just seems bad ass :P
