1. Most historians actually don't think the Mayans thought it was going to be the end of the world, just the start of a change in culture.

2. This is the most accurate of them, although "deadly peak" is a bit strong - no scientists really seem to think the increased solar activity will kill people, but it might mean we have slightly more power cuts and your mobile phone and TV reception might get slightly worse.

3. There simply isn't enough matter in the experiments for 'mini black holes' - again, media hype without any understanding of what's happening.

4. Various religious nutjobs say it's the end of the world about once a year. Hasn't happened yet and why should we believe them over any of the other world religions? It might be slightly more persuasive if any religious scholars believed them, but the doomsayers are always in an absolutely tiny minority because the information in the Bible is just so incredibly vague.

5. This was all fine (if seriously pessimistic) until "geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang" - geologists have never seriously predicted a volcano eruption more than a couple of weeks in advance. Plus no volcanoes on Earth are thought to be big enough to 'block out the sun' - there's actually a bigger one in Russia which is thought to be more of a danger, which could wipe out a handful of towns and villages in the area and seriously disrupt air travel in North East Asia, but 'block out the Sun' it will not.

6. Erm... where the fuck did you hear this?

7. Pole shift takes between 1,000 and 10,000 years. It hasn't started yet, I don't know where you heard that the poles are drifting apart. Yes, when it happens the magnetic field will be seriously disrupted, but it won't disappear - in fact most predictions say it'll be better at protecting us (except a few isolated spots). Even if it started tomorrow we wouldn't see any real effect for at least 100 years, so 2012 certainly isn't the end date.
