plenty of classic nights in the uk. There's probably as many as there possibly could be. Any more and they wouldn't do very well as people only wanna hear a night of pure classics once or twice a year.

people aren't into edm, a 1 year old track for them is obscure because they only want to hear what they've on their ipod as a 64kbps mp3, dj will play it @128kbps on a mixer set to mono.

One night they spot you on the street in your skibbies trying to sell your shoes. You tell them who you are, but they nail you. Then she happens by and she says "Christ you look fucked", she says "Hang tough!". But you don't say anything, you just think "what a bum rap for a nice, sensitive guy like me".

I doubt this tracklist reflects the kind of set you'll hear today. 2008 is not really what the scene is like right now. Yes all that Electro House was coming out more and more around that time, but I don't think House was as pop on the radio at that time. Maybe you guys can reinforce this?

Now, the majority of pop I hear on the radio is pop House. I think this crowd is making their way into the dance scene, and this is the change we are seeing. This 'general crowd' typically can't handle instrumental music to my knowledge. They need the vocals for constant stimulus.

I am happy to be playing a few old school Goa/psytrance sets at various Canadian festivals this summer. Open Mind in Quebec has an entire night of old school programming on the main stage. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of this going on at the superclubs and gigantic festivals... but if you go looking you'll probably find music lovers with an interest in the timeless classics.

every time Ive heard carl cox lately he plays a mix of classics and new stuff but it hasnt been a good mix, more hits like yeke yeke etc

to me, theres a difference between classics and hits but not many djs seem to distinguish between the two.

Most people misinterpret classic to mean "old stuff that's popular", where what they should be playing is "old stuff that's good".

There's some venn overlapping, but generally I'm not interested in music I already fucking know. When I go to an oldskool night, I want to hear shit I may have overlooked. Going to a trance classics night just feels like a bullshit copout because there's no ingenuity in the set list, its just a top ten list from 1998.



If I could give two pieces of advice for every DJ, its:

1) Avoid your own/friends/label's music
2) Avoid popular music

Get original. Get inventive. Play obscure shit no one has heard or knows about. And do it in a fresh and unusual way.

Totally agreed with you on those points, Ishkur. The old school hit parade is not what it is about... particularly not when there are so many great but overlooked songs from years ago.

I think the reason is probably because most classics nights are just an excuse for lazy over-the-hill DJs like John Kelly to play Fire Wire and numerous other shit old tunes in no particular order. I've only been to a handful to trance classics nights that were remotely inspirational.

I wish more people thought things through like Ishkur does, instead of just reaching for the easiest thing on the shelf...

Now, about 90% of the tracklist is pre-2000 (with a couple being pre-1990), but unless you were actually around during that time or are a younger, ardent crate-digger, you probably wouldn't recognize most of what's on this mix. I've even played out sets like this one to younger (I'm in my 40s), largely un-EDM-educated crowds and had the dancefloor bumpin' the entire time. But the majority of North American electronic music fans are bandwagoners latching on to the latest and greatest - it's like saying you love Jazz, but only listen to Diana Krall and anything produced after her.

Suffice to say, there's been a shitload of excellent electronic music released over the past 40 years - those who have the patience to look past conveniently packaged Beatport/Juno/RA top ten lists will find a veritable treasure-trove of outstanding and unique material is there for the taking.
