Actually, they do. Busting silos, which is what Trident would be best at, does require accuracy.

The Soviets made up for this issue with numbers. They planned to put 2-3 warheads down per silo, ground bursts, in the 700 to 1000 kiloton range. There are a lot of Silos in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, and Wyoming... and there used to be a lot more back then (including in Arizona, Arkansas, and a few other states).

Fun fact: one of the most accurate and robust navigation system known to mankind is actually the homing pigeon.
I find that even more amazing. Something that eats bread thrown by old people in parks beats all the fancy science.

So you're proposing that they build a little pigeon cockpit in these missiles???

Yea, I read a long time ago that some birds are able to sense magnetic north, like they actually... "see" north and have constant reference point in that direction at all times. I guess they are able to figure out how to translate places on the globe so they know they are traveling back to where they started from. Amazing.

There's a new movie out on Netflix right now called "Shock & Awe". It features a ton of info on this subject, mostly regarding JDAMS and Tomahawk missiles and their guidance systems.

True. When the Americans bombed Hiroshima, the bomb was supposed to hit Paris.

Just a minor mistake.

Explain me about the iraq war. They used all these lazer guided and DPS guided missles to bombard them. THe reports came back that over 80% of their missiles missed, but don't quote me on that. It's all but a memory.

Answer me this. How fast can a super power (China, GB, Russia, US) decide to annihilate someone, even if it's against the rules of war. Deploying their air force and navy.

Where are you getting these numbers?

The US and Russia could destroy each other, and a good chunk of the rest of the world in about 40 minutes. Ten minutes to make the decision, ten to thirty for missiles to reach their targets.

All the other nuclear powers combined do not have enough warheads to do the same really.

China has less nuclear weapons than Israel by most accounts (~200 vs. ~400).

Two Ohio class ballistic missile subs could level enough destruction on China in 10 minutes to reach Dr. Herman Khan's definition of a country being "destroyed".
