First, thanks for sharing Raphie.

However, I just watched the gain staging one and I have beef:

Master peaking at -10dbfs makes no sense to me because.....

1, His reasoning that you should turn up the speakers, will completely fuck your calibrated monitoring system. You have your master set to zero, your speakers calibrated to K(whatever) and you mix your tracks to a preset point somewhere under 0dbfs, to preference - maybe -3dbfs, even -6 if you must, but -10db?

2, He says is you want to make it louder later you gain use the all function in PTHD which is fine, as it has the same effect of mixing to a higher reference under 0dbfs but it's also the same thing as raising the master but again this is bad because of the calibration of your mixing system.

3, He asserts that it only matters in the analogue domain to come in as hot as possible. He's right if everything is in the box - the moment you're using any outboard or mic inputs it completely negates his reasoning, as you will encounter inherent noise floor.

4, Why lower? You're just not using all the available bit depth then?

I'd love to know if I'm wrong.

I thought that too.. I use headphones so my room treatment doesn't matter, and I work all in the box, but yea. Plus I don't get my tracks mastered, too poor.

True on that one i'm with you as well RANN

I think from that gain staging video's the 3 key takeaways can be:
- don't clip anything (though in 32bit daws, this doesn't neccecarily needs to be a problem on anything else than an input or masterbus)
- leave some headroom on your masterbus, as this gives you flexibility in the mix
- leave your master on "unity gain" to preserve bitdepth, if you struggle with levels, adjust its feed, not the master itself.

What i like from the vids is that it points out "31 areas of attention" who my vary from "ehw i know that", to "ehw never thought of that" It gives a decent kind of foundation for people who are new at mixing full stop.

In the video about listening volumes he discussed occasionally turning the volume way, way down.

I'm working on Darkstep right now, and my gosh is this good advice. When the bass sounds full when the master fader is at -20 dB, when every element sounds just as good at that level, my god does is sound excellent at normal volume.

Thanks for sharing Raphie. Appreciate it.
